In an interview in Vancouver, Red Wings’ Vice President, and General Manager of Team Canada, Steve Yzerman claims that it would be a mistake for the NHL not to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

There have been questions raised due to increased injuries this season, and scheduling difficulties within the NHL because of the three week Olympic break, on whether or not the NHL would suspend play for the 2014 Olympic Games. Yzerman acknowledged these, but stated “The NHL’s participation has enhanced the games in the last three Olympics… As a player you look forward to these opportunities and that I believe it would be a mistake for the league not to participate.”

The Men’s Olympic hockey tournament begins today.
