Today In Play! Wings Photo-Journalist, AJ Petronzi spent the afternoon at Detroit Red Wings netminder Chris Osgood's house as part of the Toast of Hockeytown auction event.

The Red Wings auctioned off a chance for a kid and five of his friends to play hockey with Chris Osgood in his back yard.

Today, Drew Dagenias (Team USA jacket), his friends Riley Maher (Black jacket), Nathan Farrar (Purple Shirt), Landan Edwaies (Flannel jacket), and Tristan Lupinski (Black and red fleece), as well as Osgood’s neighbor Colin O’Keefe (USA goalie equipment and light blue jacket) met and played hockey with Osgood.

RED WINGS PLACE KIRK MALTBY ON LONG-TERM INJURED RESERVE AND ACTIVATE ANDREAS LILJA

Detroit, MI…The Detroit Red Wings announced today that forward Kirk Maltby has been placed on long-term injured reserve and will undergo right shoulder surgery that will sideline him for four to six weeks. The Red Wings also activated defenseman Andreas Lilja from injured reserve.

Maltby, 37, is currently in his 14th season with the Red Wings and his 16th season in the National Hockey League. The four-time Stanley Cup champion has played in 52 games for Detroit this season, registering six points (4-2-5) and 32 PIM. The nine-year NHL veteran is scheduled to make his season debut on March 1st when the Red Wings take on the Avalanche in Denver.

USA WILL PLAY FOR GOLD

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Team USA came out today, in a game which most experts favored Finland, and dominated. Team USA won 6-1 over Finland and guaranteed that the USA will leave Vancouver with a medal. The only question that remains is whether the Men’s bracket will end with a Canada vs. USA rematch (as the woman’s bracket did) or if Slovakia can move into the final race for gold.

Teemu Selanne, the all-time Olympic goal leader, was blanked today, but Detroit Red Wing Brian Rafalski moved into place as this Olympics leading scorer.

Late tonight Canada and Slovakia will finish filling in the medal bracket.

Sweden Gets Upset! Olympic Men’s Bracket a Blind Guess.

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Slovakia has upset Sweden, meaning two metal favorite teams are now out of the tournament. With this upset, Russia and Sweden have gone home and only the medal favorite Canada remains.

The best kept secret coming into these games was the Slovakian team, but with names like Marian Hossa and Marian Gaborik, it’s hard to understand why. This Slovakian team now has upsets of Russia and Sweden under their belts and will face Canada Friday to see if they can make it three upsets.

On the other side, Finland will play the USA. While there were no doubts Finland would be staring down the medal platform coming into the games, no one expected Team USA to make the Semi-Finals. With a huge upset over Canada, and a weak game against the Swiss yesterday, Finland would be the favorite coming into this game. However, Finland looked equally bad, if not worse, than the USA did in their game. So this one is anyone's game too.

So if you’re trying to predict the medal games, In Play! suggests you should try your hand at the lottery. You’d have better odds.

Canada Hockey Brings Russia and Dirty "O" Back to Earth

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

In what was expected to be a goal buffet for both teams, only Canada showed up with empty stomachs and the Russians made sure it was all you can eat. Canada has defeated Russia in a booming 7-3 win to end Russia’s bid for an Olympic medal.

In all the things that didn’t make sense in this game, the biggest was the choice of goaltenders for Russia. It’s hard to put Evgeni Nabokov on the bench, but after giving up four weak goals, it’s not understandable why he started the second period, giving up two more goals before Ilya Bryzgalov was brought in and was great for the rest of the game.

Russia just made mistake after mistake and if not for names like Alexander Ovechkin and Pavel Datsyuk it’d have seemed that Russia was just not in the same league as Canada. In the end, Canada just manhandled the Russian team tonight.

Canada will play the winner of the Sweden Slovakia game which will not be played until midnight.

USA Heads to Olympic Semi-Finals with 1-0 Win Over Swiss

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The USA won a very close, poorly played, quarterfinal match against Switzerland, who they had defeated 3-1 earlier in the preliminary round.

The USA looked like the team that played their first game in the Olympics, the game where Ryan Miller didn’t look great in goal and Brian Rafalski wasn’t making a bid to be the next Bobby Orr. Today, however, Ryan Miller was on top of his game but the rest of Team USA was not.

The USA did outshoot the Swiss by a large margin, but Jonas Hiller was on top of his game in net and he almost managed to keep Switzerland in the tourney like he’d been doing for the entire Olympics.

The USA advances to the Semi-Finals where they will face the winner between Finland and the Czech Republic, a game which will be played later tonight.

Former Pistons CEO Tom Wilson Joins Red Wings

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After refusing to talk about his opportunities that caused him to resign from the Detroit Pistons, Tom Wilson was announced today as the CEO of the Ilitches’ sports networks, mainly taking a role with the Detroit Red Wings.

Wilson should be familiar to Detroit sports fans; he resigned only five days ago from the Pistons, who he’d worked with for 32 years. Wilson jokingly told the 1000 some odd people at hand, “You’ll be so disappointed.” There was disappointment in the Detroit sports world when Wilson resigned, but now that disappointment should be gone since he didn’t actually leave Detroit.

Offical Release from Ilitch Sports and Entertainment

WILSON JOINS ILITCH ORGANIZATION

Accomplished sports and entertainment industry leader to head new enterprise
Initial focus to include collaboration with Red Wings, Tigers and entertainment venues.

DETROIT – The hiring of Thomas S. Wilson as President and Chief Executive Officer of a newly
created enterprise working across the Ilitch sports and entertainment businesses was announced today
by Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. The hiring is effective immediately.

Wilson is joining the Ilitch organization after an illustrious 32‐year career with the Detroit
Pistons, including the last 22 years as president and CEO of Palace Sports and Entertainment. In his new
capacity, Wilson will report directly to Christopher Ilitch.

“Today is a landmark day for our entire organization,” Ilitch said. “Tom Wilson is a visionary in
the industry who will make an immediate impact on our continued growth. He has revolutionized the
business in many ways during his career and will continue to do so. His genuine passion and
enthusiasm, coupled with his outstanding leadership abilities, promise to take our successful businesses
to an even higher level.

“We have an amazing organization today, with tremendous employees and excellent leaders.
And like any successful team, we’re always looking for ways to grow, to improve, to become even better
– and to take on new challenges,” Ilitch stated. “We have reached a point where it makes perfect sense
to leverage the resources of all of our companies, and capitalize on synergies that can spur additional
growth and innovation. Tom will play a vital role in helping us achieve these business goals and
identifying synergies across our companies. He will have autonomy and support from me, and I know
our other business leaders look forward to working side‐by‐side with Tom to enhance the collaboration
among our companies.”

As president and CEO of the soon‐to‐be‐named new enterprise, Wilson will provide input into
every aspect of the Ilitch companies. One of his initial strategic priorities will be to leverage the natural
business opportunities among Olympia Entertainment, the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers –
while also aggressively looking for new areas of collaboration to grow these businesses as well as other
companies within the Ilitch enterprise.

Wilson will also look for innovative ways to package and promote the substantial assets of
Olympia Entertainment, one of the most diverse and leading sports and entertainment organizations in
the country. Olympia’s vast portfolio of venues includes Detroit’s legendary Fox Theatre, Joe Louis
Arena, Comerica Park, Cobo Arena, Masonic Temple and City Theatre. Wilson will be responsible for
guiding and growing these venues as well as looking for opportunities to expand the portfolio.

“I feel very fortunate to have worked with a great organization and family in the Pistons and the
Davidsons, and to now have a similar opportunity with an equally iconic sports, entertainment and
civic-minded family like the Ilitches,” Wilson said. “We were competitors in the marketplace, but I have
always admired the accomplishments of the entire Ilitch organization, on the field and in the
community.“

There are wonderful assets here with the Wings, Tigers, the entertainment venues, and all of
the other highly respected businesses,” he noted. “I’m excited to get started with my new colleagues.
And knowing Chris’ vision for the organization in total, along with the experience and ideas I’d like to
contribute, I can tell you that all of us have a unique opportunity to accomplish great things together –
to do things we’ve never done before, and to go places we’ve never been.”

Reporting to Wilson in his new position will be Dana Warg, president of Olympia Entertainment,
and Steve Violetta, senior vice president of Business Affairs for the Detroit Red Wings. Duane McLean,
senior vice president of Business Operations for the Detroit Tigers, will continue to report directly to
Tigers President, CEO and General Manager Dave Dombrowski, while also adding a strong dotted line
reporting relationship to Wilson.

“Ken (Holland) and Dave will continue to report directly to me in running the sports operations
of the Wings and Tigers, respectively. Nothing changes in that regard,” Team Owner Mike Ilitch stated.
“However, given Tom’s sales and marketing expertise, his connections in the industry and community,
and his proven ability to get things done, I believe that Ken, Dave and Tom will find natural opportunities
to partner together on the promotional and customer service sides of hockey and baseball. Once Chris
and the guys put their heads together, the possibilities could be endless.”

Holland, executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings noted that he
got to know Tom when Palace Sports & Entertainment owned the Tampa Bay Lightning, “I know that
Tom is very well‐respected in the sports and entertainment industry. All of us at the Red Wings look
forward to working closely with him,” Holland said.

Dombrowski echoed Holland’s welcoming comments regarding Wilson.

“I’ve known Tom personally over the years and have been genuinely impressed with his work
and that of his staff at the Palace,” Dombrowski said. “I look forward to working with Tom. It is great to
have him as part of the overall Ilitch organization.”

During Wilson’s tenure with the Pistons, the team was widely recognized as one of the best
marketed entities in the NBA. Wilson was also instrumental in the design, staffing and operating
philosophy of the state‐of‐the‐art Palace of Auburn Hills, which has captured nine “Arena of the Year”
awards over the years. Wilson and his PS&E team were also responsible for the complete makeover of
the DTE Energy Music Theatre, which was voted the number one amphitheater in the country the past
19 years and the Best Outdoor Concert Venue in 2000.

“We are thrilled to be adding a person of Tom’s caliber to our organization,” Ilitch said. “He has
a tremendous track record of leadership, success and innovation in the world of sports and
entertainment. One of his hallmarks has been the ability to leverage and market resources across an
organization, while also identifying new and exciting business opportunities along the way. And he has
an extraordinary gift to resonate his vision with sponsors, season ticket and suite holders, advertisers,
sports fans and concert goers. We’re looking for those same high impact contributions.

“Our collective vision is one of continued growth and opportunity for the entire Ilitch
organization,” he added. “It’s going to be an exciting journey for all of us. This is a harbinger of bigger
and better things for sports and entertainment fans in Detroit, southeast Michigan and beyond.”

USA UPSETS CANADA! ADVANCES TO QUARTER-FINALS

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Even through elimination hasn’t started in the Olympic tournament yet, Teams USA and Russia have claimed places in the quarter finals and, depending on how the game plays out later tonight, both Sweden and Finland can clinch the last two spots even though one of the teams must lose tonight.

Red Wings Russian stats: Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist in Russia’s 4-2 win over the Czech Republic.

The real story tonight was the USA-Canada game. Even through the 2006 metal rematch is up next, nothing can touch this game and its excitement. The game was insane, its climax coming with the USA out to a two goal lead and Sydney Crosby tying the game with only a minute left. There also was a pair of Team USA breakaways, both set up by Brian Rafalski, separated only be a Team Canada breakaway; all of that happened in a time span of about 25 seconds. Ryan Miller stood on his head and delivered this game to Team USA.

Red Wings USA stats: Brian Rafalski is on fire, scoring Team USA’s last two goals coming into tonight and netting the first two tonight. He also set up USA’s third goal, although he didn’t get an assist, and took the shot that resulted in the deflection that was the game winner. In these last two games, Rafalski has matched his goal total for the entire season in the NHL.

More Olympic Updates – Selanne Sets Record

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Yesterday Sweden beat Belarus, Finland embarrassed Germany, and the Czechs topped Latvia.

What does this all mean going into what’s been deemed, “Rivalry Weekend?” Four teams have perfect scores (USA, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic). With Sweden playing Finland on Sunday, one of those teams will be forced to loose. USA will play Canada on Sunday and the Czechs play Russia also Sunday.

Olympic Red Wings’ stats from Friday: Johan Franzen scored the game winning goal for Sweden.

New Olympic Record: Teemu Selanne had and assist in Finland’s game, moving him into the all-time lead as the Olympic points scorer with 37 career points.

RUSSIA UPSET BY SLOVAKIA 2-1

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

In the lowest scoring game of the Olympics yet, Slovakia upset the favored Russia.

Slovakia tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Marian Hossa after Russia had gotten a goal by Alexei Morozov.

This game changed the way a lot of metal round brackets looked. After last night, Team USA is the only team to have a full six points, followed by Canada with five and Russia with four. Depending on how Sweden does against Belarus and Finland against Germany tonight, Team USA could finish the preliminary round out in first place if they can beat Canada.

Canada Beat Swiss! In Shootout?

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Despite losing 3-1 to Team USA and being down two goals 35 seconds into the second period, the Swiss team forced Canada to an overtime, then a shootout before Sydney Crosby scored the game winner on his second shot in the shootout.

Canada lost a huge point tonight in having to go to extra time. With tonight’s win, they only have five points in the tournament bracket, while the USA has six points and it’s likely that Russia will move out to six tonight also. Canada will have to beat the USA on Sunday if they plan on being a top four seed going into the medal round.

Slovakia lost 1-3 to the Czech Republic last night and tonight must face the Russian team which is a heavy favorite to walk away with either a gold or silver medal. An update about that game will come later.

Detroit’s Brian Rafalski Nets Two, USA Destroys Norway

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After setting up the play that led to Patrick Kane putting Team USA up to a three goal game, Brian Rafalski scored two goals in the last three minutes to put the USA over Norway 6-1.

Rafalski, who’s been rather quiet offensively this season for the Red Wings, should have had an assist on the Patrick Kane goal, at least he would have if it’d been in the NHL, but in international hockey you have to actually be on the ice to get credit for an assist. Rafalski had skated to the bench before the goal was scored.

It seems that Team USA is going to stick with the top defensive line of Ryan Suter and Rafalski. Team USA also only allowed 11 shots against Ryan Miller who stopped 10 of them.

This was a big win for the USA as they will not see action again until Sunday when they take on Team Canada.

Speaking of Team Canada, more Olympic updates to come tonight when Canada takes on the Swiss and Russia takes on Slovakia.

Finland and Sweden Get Wins in Game 1

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Finland came out and dominated the Belarus team, wining the game 4-1. Niklas Hagman scored two goals and Teemu Selanne assisted on a goal to move into a tie as the highest points scorer in Olympic history. The Red Wings’ Valtteri Filppula scored Finland’s third goal which came just seconds into the third period. Grand Rapids Sergei Kolosov was not involved in any of the offense for Belarus.

Sweden, on the other hand, struggled against Germany. Germany should have been one of the easier teams in this bracket. While Finland did take silver in 2006, Belarus has an upset history with Sweden which includes a forth place finish in 2002. Sweden only scored two goals against Germany which also didn’t play well. While Sweden contains the largest number Red Wings of all the Olympic squads, none of them were involved with in offence in the game.

Later tonight the Czech Republic takes on Slovakia (two teams and nations that have bad blood with each other). The update for that game will come tomorrow along with more from the USA, Canada, and Russia (which plays Slovakia).

Canada and Russia Win Opening Round Hockey Games

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Even through no Detroit Red Wings play for team Canada, most of the team’s administration has offices in Joe Louis Arena. Steve Yzerman spent a tough couple days answering questions about Team Canada, and Coach Mike Babcock was thrown under the bus yesterday when he announced that Roberto Luongo would start instead of Martin Brodeur, but Canada beat Norway 8-0. Danny Heatley had two goals and Jerome Iginla appeared to have scored a hat-trick, but as of this morning the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has credited his first goal to Rick Nash, leaving Iginla with only two goals last night.

Russia also scored eight goals last night, beating Latvia 8-2. Concerns were raised about the age of former Red Wing Sergei Fedorov, but Fedorov recorded the primary assists on both of Russia’s opening goals. Alexander Ovechkin had two goals, the second of which Detroit Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk assisted on. It was Datsyuk only point of the night. Check earlier In Play! posts for info on Team USA's victory.

More Olympic updates coming today as Finland (Red Wings’ Valteri Filppula) plays Belarus (Grand Rapid’s Sergei Kolosov), and Team Sweden (Nicklas Lidstrom, Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, and Henrik Zetterberg) take on Germany.

Red Wings’ Steve Yzerman Claims “Mistake” With NHL and Olympics

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

In an interview in Vancouver, Red Wings’ Vice President, and General Manager of Team Canada, Steve Yzerman claims that it would be a mistake for the NHL not to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

There have been questions raised due to increased injuries this season, and scheduling difficulties within the NHL because of the three week Olympic break, on whether or not the NHL would suspend play for the 2014 Olympic Games. Yzerman acknowledged these, but stated “The NHL’s participation has enhanced the games in the last three Olympics… As a player you look forward to these opportunities and that I believe it would be a mistake for the league not to participate.”

The Men’s Olympic hockey tournament begins today.

Red Wings Head Into Olympic Break With A Win

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings broke out to a two goal lead in the first period and never looked back, beating the Ottawa Senators 4-1.

Kirk Maltby, despite rumors of needing shoulder surgery over the Olympic Break, was the first to get use of the goal lamp tonight. Pavel Datsyuk followed with another goal shortly before the first period came to an end. Peter Regin put Ottawa within a goal in the second, but Dan Cleary put Detroit back up to a two goal lead. Johan Franzen scored an empty net goal at the end of the game.

Detroit played a solid game and on a rare occasion actually won a game where they out shot the opposing team. Detroit got outstanding efforts from Drew Miller and Pavel Datsyuk tonight. The Red Wings needed to get things turned around before the Olympic break but they’d hoped to do so before the final game. Depending on how the rest of the games in the league end tonight, Detroit could be tied for a playoff spot going into the Olympics.

In Play! Man of the Game: Pavel Datsyuk. Despite a five goal evening, Datsyuk was the only player to have two points on the night. He also almost netted two additional goals, hitting the crossbar once and, on a shot taken from between his legs, almost put the puck in.

Red Wings Lose Another Game in Shootout 3-2

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

For the first time this season the Detroit Red Wings lost to the San Jose Sharks. San Jose won 3-2 in a shootout giving Detroit a 3-1 edge on the season series.

Johan Franzen scored the opening tally in his first game in Detroit since suffering his knee injury in October. Thirty-five seconds later Joe Thornton tied the game up. With seconds left in the first, Dwight Helminen put the Sharks up by a goal. Working into the third, Jason Williams netted the tying goal despite the fact that play continued for a full 20 seconds before the goal counted. In the shootout, Patrick Marleau scored the only goal.

San Jose cut deep groves to the penalty box tonight but the Wings only went one for five on the power play. Detroit did outplay San Jose in every faction and the Sharks looked like the frustrated and distracted team that got shutout by Columbus last night. Big for the Wings tonight was the crowd in Joe Louis Arena. From the opening face-off the building was deafening as if it were a playoff game.

In Play! Man of the Game: Evgeni Nabokov. Nabokov was a highlight real in himself tonight, making no less than seven highlight quality saves. Nabokov made 50 saves in total on the night.

ADDED BONUS. Post game audio with Tomas Holstrom and Head Coach Mike Babcock

Red Wings Lose Third Straight

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After a huge third period comeback, the Detroit Red Wings lost to the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in a shootout.

Kris Draper was first on the board tonight and scored the only goal of the first period. St. Louis came surging back with goals from David Perron and Paul Kariya. The Blues pushed out to a two goal advantage with a goal from Andy McDonald midway through the third. With five minutes left, Pavel Datsyuk and Valtteri Filppula tied the game back up and forced the shootout.

The Wings looked worn down for most of the game, but after giving up the third straight goal, something clicked and the Wings came alive. It’s evident that the Olympic break is going to be good for the team, even through seven regulars and two prospects will see action in Vancouver. Coming out of the Olympics, the Wings could have a massive push and get themselves back into the playoff picture. The Wings did get Johan Franzen back on this trip, but lost Holmstrom, Kronwall, and Eaves. They also only managed to get four out of 10 points on this road trip.

In Play! Man of the Game: Pavel Datsyuk. Datsyuk was quiet most of the game and lost more draws than he won, but ultimately buckled down and was a big part of Detroit’s comeback.

Johan Franzen will make his fourth start of the season today in St. Louis. Franzen, who suffered a torn MCL on October 8, has played the St. Louis Blues twice this season already. This will also be Franzen’s second game in North America this season.

As for the rest of the injured Red Wings, Tomas Holmstrom is day-to-day with a bruised knee and it’s not evident if he’ll play tonight in St. Louis. Niklas Kronwall (re-injured left knee) is fine but is waiting for a new knee brace. Kronwall plans to play again Thursday. Drew Miller (bruised ankle) will play today and Patrick Eaves (sprained ankle) will not play. Jimmy Howard, despite admitting to being tired, will start in goal.

Red Wings Suffer Devastating Loss in LA

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After going out to a three goal lead after the first period, the Detroit Red Wings lost to the LA Kings 4-3 in regulation.
Henrik Zetterberg was the first to net a puck tonight, followed just 16 seconds later by Valtteri Filppula. With only five seconds left in the first, Zetterberg scored his second of the day. From that point on it was LA on a comeback. Alexander Frolov scored first after a giveaway, followed by Michal Handzus and Ryan Smyth. In the third, Handzus scored the game winner with just a couple minutes left in the game.

Detroit shut down in the second period and never recovered. Adding to the problems Detroit had was the loss of Tomas Holmstrom after the first period and then the losses of Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves in the second. Being a whole forward line down, the Wings just tired out and died off during the end of the game. The Ville Leino trade, which In Play! predicted two weeks ago, should have gotten the team moving in the right direction but instead the team just fell apart.

In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg scored two goals and was only on the ice for one goal against, which was caused by a misplayed puck on behalf of Jimmy Howard. Zetterberg had several chances at the hat-trick but Jonathan Quick and the post prevented that.

Wings Lose to Trailing Anaheim

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings gave up two quick goals and never recovered, falling 3-1 to the Anaheim Ducks.

Ryan Whitney scored just one minute into the game on a puck that deflected of Brad Stuart. Later in the first period, Kyle Chipchura scored a reviewed goal that deflected off his hand and into the net. Anaheim extended that goal run to three when Bobby Ryan scored. With just ten seconds left in he second period, Pavel Datsyuk scored to put Detroit on the board.

Just like the beginning of the season, this was a case of Detroit outplaying their opponent and falling to a goalie. Anaheim was five points back from the Wings, but moved up to three in the playoff picture. Calgary bumped Detroit back out of the playoffs although the teams are tied at 64 points and 147 goals for. Calgary has 28 wins and Detroit only has 27.

In Play! Man of the Game: Jonas Hiller. Hiller was forced to make some huge saves and came up big two or three times to keep Detroit at bay. Hiller made 46 saves on Detroit’s 47 shots.

Wings Hope to Repeat Success from Last Night

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings will look to repeat the success they had last night in a 4-2 win over San Jose when they take on the Anaheim Ducks tonight.

The Wings won a fairly dominate victory over San Jose, which has the best record in the NHL. Anaheim, like Detroit, is fighting for a chance to make the playoffs but are much further out of the picture than the Wings.

The only thing the Wings are not looking to repeat from last night is the performance of Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall played well until he lost the blade of his skate on the penalty kill and later re-injured his left knee. Kronwall will not play tonight because of the knee injury.
