A Separation Of Church And Sport
By Jack Rosenberg
“Thank you Lord for letting me get around that cornerback and get open to score this touchdown...thank you Lord.”
“Lord grant me the wisdom to know which way the left guard is going to pull so I can go the other way.”
As he crosses himself stepping up to the plate, “Lord give me the strength to hit this ball over the right field fence and lead my team to victory.”
Well by now you probably know where I’m going with this or you are so offended you have turned the page.
Religion in sports --is there a place for it? Will somebody please put an end to this? If you can’t throw up signs to the camera in the NFL why is it ok to kneel down and pray?
What’s the difference between crossing yourself and throwing up a sign to the camera guy forcing tens of millions of people to witness? In principle they are both the same thing aren’t they; a ritual, a form of communication.
