The Detroit Red Wings were absolutely destroyed 6-3 by the Vancouver Canucks in their first game home from the Olympics.
Vancouver had two goals from Ryan Kesler, their first and sixth goals, as well as tallies from Alex Burrows, Kyle Wellwood, Sami Salo, and Mikael Samuelsson. Detroit matched Vancouver goal to goal for the first two with goals by Jason Williams and Henrik Zetterberg, Zetterberg’s 200 career goal. However, the Red Wings didn’t score again until the last five minutes of the game when Johan Franzen scored on the powerplay.
The Wings looks like a collection of lemmings, just aimlessly jumping the boards with no purpose. Jimmy Howard was pulled from net midway through the game after allowing 4 goals, but Chris Osgood didn’t look much better himself. Howard allowed one goal for every 5 shots he faced, Osgood only managed to hold the Canucks to a goal on every six shots faced. On the offensive side, the Wings couldn’t hit the net with the puck if their lives depended on it. The Wings had more blocked (12) and missed (20) shots than they had shots (31) on goal.
In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik/Daniel Sedin. The Sedin twins were on fire tonight and, although they didn’t score any goals, amassed six points between the two of them.
