Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Ilari Filppula on a one-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Filppula, 28, is the older brother of current Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula. The 5-11, 191-pound forward played the past two seasons for TPS Turku of the Finnish Elite League (SM-liiga). In 2009-10, the Vantaa, Finland, native led TPS Turku and finished ninth in league scoring with 49 points (12-37-49) in 58 games. He won the Jari Kurri Award as the Finnish Elite League’s playoff MVP, scoring two goals and adding 12 assists in 15 postseason games, helping TPS Turku capture their first SM-liiga title since 2000-01. Past winners of the Jari Kurri award include current National Hockey League players Saku Koivu (1995), Olli Jokinen (1998), Miika Kiprusoff (1999), Kari Lehtonen (2002) and Niklas Backstrom (2004, 2005).
