Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom has signed a one year deal to play for the Wings for the 2010-2011 season, ending the debate about his retirement. It will be his 19th season in the NHL.

Although, in keeping with team policy, no information about the contract has been released, it is rumored that Lidstrom will be making closer to six million dollars rather than the seven and a half he made this season.

...Six-Time Norris Trophy Winning Defenseman Returns For 19th Season…

Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom to a one-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lidstrom, 40, will return for his 19th season in Hockeytown. He was Detroit’s third round pick (53rd overall) in the 1989 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Vasteras, Sweden, native has won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman six times during his NHL career (2001, ’02, ’03, ’06, ’07, ’08). He is the only European-born captain to lead his team to a Stanley Cup championship (2008) and was the first European-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP in 2002. Lidstrom is a four-time Stanley Cup champion (1997, 1998, 2002, 2008), holds the franchise single-season records for assists (64) and points (80) by a defenseman, ranks fourth in Red Wings history in games played (1,412) and points (1,046), and has the highest plus-minus rating (+431) since 1991-92, his first year in the NHL. He was recently named the NHL’s player of the decade (2000-09) by both the Sporting News and SportsIllustrated.com.

“I’ve been fortunate to watch Nick play every day for over a decade and I believe he is the best two-way defenseman in the world,” said Holland. “We’re thrilled that Nick has decided to come back and play for another season.”

In 2009-10, Lidstrom recorded his 1,000th career point when he assisted on Henrik Zetterberg’s game-winning goal on October 15, 2009 vs. the Los Angeles Kings. He became just the eighth defenseman in NHL history to achieve the milestone. Lidstrom also played in his 1,400th career game on March 19, 2010 at Edmonton, becoming just the 12th defenseman and the 31st player overall to accomplish the feat. He recently played in his 247th career postseason game on May 8, 2010 vs. the San Jose Sharks in Game Five of the Western Conference Semifinals, tying him with Patrick Roy for second all-time, trailing only former teammate, Chris Chelios (266).
