Abdelkader, Howard Added to 2012 U.S. Men's National Team

Team USA to Compete in IIHF World Men's Championship, May 4-20, in Finland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forward Justin Abdelkader (Muskegon, Mich./Detroit Red Wings/Michigan State Univ.) and goaltender Jimmy Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Detroit Red Wings/Univ. of Maine) have been added to the U.S. Men's National Team roster for the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship it was announced today by USA Hockey. The tournament is scheduled for May 4-20, 2012, in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.

Abdelkader and Howard are making their debuts on the U.S. Men's National Team, though each player has represented Team USA in the past. Abdelkader played for the U.S. National Junior Team that won the bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship. Howard backstopped the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team to the gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Men's Under-18 Championship and was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship. Howard also spent two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program from 2000-02.

The first 17 players for the U.S. Men's National Team were announced on April 11. Forward Joey Crabb defenseman Chris Butler and goalie John Curry have been added since then. Team USA now has 12 forwards, six defensemen and three goaltenders on its roster. The maximum roster size is 25, which includes three goaltenders and 22 forwards and defensemen.

DATSYUK VOTED SELKE TROPHY FINALIST

NEW YORK (April 23, 2012) -- Centers David Backes of the St. Louis Blues, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings are the three finalists for the 2011-12 Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is awarded "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," the National Hockey League announced today.

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted ballots for the Selke Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winner will be announced Wednesday, June 20, during the 2012 NHL Awards from Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. The 2012 NHL Awards will be broadcast by NBC Sports Network in the United States and CBC in Canada.

Following are the finalists for the Selke Trophy, in alphabetical order:

David Backes, St. Louis Blues
Backes had the highest average ice time per game among forwards (19:59) on the club that allowed the fewest goals in the NHL by a wide margin. The 6'3", 225-lb. center again was a punishing physical presence, doling out a team-leading 226 hits, joining Los Angeles forward Dustin Brown as the only players to record 200 hits or more in each of the past five seasons. Backes led the Blues in face-offs (1,353), blocked 72 shots and posted a +15 rating. The Blues captain is an NHL Trophy finalist for first time in his seven-year NHL career and is the first Blues player vying for the Selke Trophy since Michal Handzus finished second in 2000.

Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins
Bergeron led the NHL in plus-minus (+36), posting a +18 rating both at home and on the road, helping the Bruins rank second in the Eastern Conference in team defense (2.39 GAA). Appearing in a single-season
career-high 81 games, he topped all Bruins forwards in shorthanded time on ice (1:48 per game) and was dominant in the face-off circle, posting a 59.2% winning percentage (973 of 1,641) to rank second in the League behind Chicago's Jonathan Toews (59.4%). Bergeron is an NHL Trophy finalist for the first time and could become the second Bruins player to capture Selke honors, joining Steve Kasper (1982).

Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit Red Wings
Datsyuk continued his mastery of separating opponents from the puck in 2011-12 by ranking third in the NHL in takeaways (97), and his stickhandling and passing skills helped the Red Wings' renowned puck possession game. Datsyuk posted a +21 rating and was the club's top face-off man, posting a 56.2% winning percentage (702 of 1,249) -- his eighth consecutive season posting a win rate above 53%. Datsyuk has been voted a Selke finalist for the fifth consecutive year, matching the streaks of Montreal's Guy Carbonneau (1986 through 1990) and Bob Gainey (1978 through 1982) as the longest since the award was introduced in 1978.
History
The trophy was presented in 1977 by the National Hockey League Board of Governors in honor of Frank J. Selke, one of the great architects of Montreal and Toronto championship teams.

NASHVILLE ELIMINATES DETROIT, HOCKEY DONE FOR SUMMER IN HOCKEYTOWN

The Nashville Predators have eliminated the Detroit Red Wings from the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 win in Nashville.

This series could and SHOULD have looked completely different for three reasons. First, Detroit kept attempting the same play despite the fact that it didn’t work from games one to five. Second, Pekka Rinne changed the whole series by stopping anything Detroit through at him. Third, Shea Webber should have missed half the series (if not the whole series) while suspended.

Unfortunately, now the normal questions should be asked. Have we seen the last games of Tomas Holmstrom and Nicklas Lidstrom? Will Brad Stuart be back? After three consecutive early playoff outs, is it time to revisit who’s behind the bench? Will there be playoff’s next season?

RANGERS’ HAGELIN SUSPENDED FOR THREE GAMES
NEW YORK (April 15, 2012) – New York Rangers forward Carl Hagelin has been suspended for three games for elbowing Ottawa Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson during Game 2 of the teams’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series in New York on Saturday, April 14, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 10:32 of the second period. Hagelin was assessed a major penalty for elbowing. Alfredsson suffered an injury as a result of the hit.

SENATORS’ CARKNER SUSPENDED FOR ONE GAME
Ottawa Senators forward Matt Carkner has been suspended for one game for continuing to inflict punishment upon an opponent who was an unwilling combatant in an altercation during Game 2 of the team's Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with the New York Rangers in New York on Saturday, April 14, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Carkner instigated an altercation with New York forward Brian Boyle, who did not respond. After knocking Boyle to the ice with two punches, Carkner continued to throw punches at his opponent, who was an unwilling combatant. Carkner's actions classified him as an "aggressor" under NHL rules.

The incident occurred at 2:15 of the first period. Carkner was assessed a minor penalty for instigating, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

PREDATORS’ WEBER FINED $2,500 - NO SUSPENSION

NEW YORK (April 12, 2012) – Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg in Game 1 of the teams’ Western Conference Quarterfinal series in Nashville on Wednesday, April 11, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the third period. Weber was assessed a minor penalty for roughing.

“This was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg’s head into the glass,” said NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan. “As is customary whenever Supplemental Discipline is being considered, we contacted Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.

“This play and the fine that addressed it will be significant factors in assessing any incidents involving Shea Weber throughout the remainder of the playoffs.”

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

HELM UNDERGOES SUCCESFUL SURGERY RED WINGS FORWARD OUT FOR REMAINDER OF PLAYOFFS

Detroit, MI…Detrot Red Wings forward Darren Helm underwent successful surgery last night to repair lacerated tendons in his right forearm. The injury, suffered with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period of the Red Wings Western Conference Quarterfinal Game 1 vs. Nashville, will sideline Helm for the remainder of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Helm is expected to make a full recovery and return for the Red Wings 2012 training camp.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Douglas Weikert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

RED WINGS SIGN RILEY SHEAHAN TO THREE-YEAR ENTRY-LEVEL DEAL

… Center Selected by Detroit in First Round of 2010 NHL Entry Draft …

Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today announced that 20-year-old forward Riley Sheahan has been signed to a three-year entry-level contract. In accordance with club policy, additional terms of this deal will not be disclosed.

Originally selected by Detroit in the first round (21st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Sheahan spent three seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (NCAA/CCHA) from 2009-12, amassing 64 points (20G-44A) in 114 career games played at the collegiate level. Prior to enrolling at Notre Dame, Sheahan spent two seasons with his hometown St. Catharines Falcons (GHL) where he recorded 49G-85A-134P in 85 games.

Sheahan signed an Amateur Try Out agreement with the Grand Rapids Griffins on March 20 and scored his first career American Hockey League goal on March 31 versus the Oklahoma City Barons. In seven games with the Griffins, the 6’2”, 200-lb. forward has recorded 1G-1A-2P-0PIM.

RED WINGS GUSTAV NYQUIST NAMED TO AHL ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids Griffins left wing Gustav Nyquist on Wednesday was named to the 2011-12 American Hockey League All-Rookie Team.

Despite missing nine of the Griffins’ last 12 games while with the parent Detroit Red Wings, Nyquist still ranks among the AHL’s top rookies with 22 goals (T6th), 36 assists (T5th), 58 points (T4th) and four shootout goals (T2nd). Nyquist is also tied for 15th in overall AHL scoring, while leading the Griffins – the highest scoring team in the Western Conference – points, power play goals (7), power play assists (13), insurance goals (4). He also ranks among team leaders with a plus-seven rating (5th), four first goals (T3rd), a 0.571 shootout percentage (3rd) and a 14.5% shooting percentage (3rd).

In his last game with the club – a 5-2 win versus Hamilton on March 17 – Nyquist recorded three points (2-1—3) to become the franchise’s all-time rookie scoring leader. The 22-year-old is just one of seven Griffins rookies ever to score 20 goals, and his 22 goals trail only Francis Pare and Justin Abdelkader on the team’s all-time rookie goal scoring list.

A native of Halmstad, Sweden, Nyquist joined the Griffins late last season on an eight-game tryout following his junior year at the University of Maine. While a member of the Black Bears, Nyquist received consecutive nominations for the Hobey Baker Award as a sophomore and junior, while leading his team in scoring during all three of his seasons (2008-11). He racked up 144 points (50-94—144) in 113 collegiate games, leading the entire NCAA in scoring during the 2009-10 season with 61 points (19-42—61) in 39 games.

Nyquist becomes the fourth Griffin to be named to the AHL All-Rookie Team, joining current Red Wings Justin Abdelkader (2008-09) and Jimmy Howard (2005-06), as well as Brendan Smith, who was named to the All-Rookie Team last season. The 5-11, 185-pound forward was also the team’s lone representative at the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic.

Detroit’s third choice (121st overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Nyquist made his NHL debut on Nov. 1 versus Minnesota and scored his first NHL goal on March 26 versus Columbus. He has recorded seven points (1-6—7) in 15 games with the Red Wings this season, adding a plus-two rating and two penalty minutes.

Nyquist becomes a top candidate for the AHL’s Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award (outstanding rookie).

The other members of the AHL All-Rookie Team, as voted by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league’s 30 member cities, are forwards Cory Conacher (Norfolk) and Tyler Johnson (Norfolk); defensemen Matt Donovan (Bridgeport) and Cade Fairchild (Peoria); and goaltender Eddie Pasquale (St. John’s).

RED WINGS SIGN PROSPECTS RYAN SPROUL AND XAVIER OUELLET TO ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACTS

… Defensemen Were Selected by Detroit in the 2nd Round of Last Year’s NHL Entry Draft …

Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defensemen Xavier Ouellet and Ryan Sproul have both been signed to three-year entry-level contracts. In accordance with club policy, additional terms of these deals will not be disclosed.

Ouellet, 18, has skated with the Montreal Juniors/Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) franchise for the past two seasons where he has recorded 103 points (29G-74) and a rating of +43 in 130 career appearances. Selected by Detroit in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Ouellet was a member of Team Orr at the 2011 CHL Home Hardware Top Prospects Game, played at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Montreal’s first choice (14th overall) at the 2009 QMJHL Entry Draft, Ouellet was named to the QMJHL All-Rookie Team in 2009-10 and represented his home province of Quebec at the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario. Currently competing in the President’s Cup Playoffs with Blainville-Boisbriand, Ouellet finished third amongst all QMJHL defensemen with 60 points (21G-39A) in 63 appearances during the 2011-12 regular season.

Detroit’s third selection (second round, 55th overall) at last summer’s NHL Entry Draft, Sproul, 19, has spent the last two seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he has amassed 37G-50A-87P-89PIM in 122 games played. The 6’4”, 185-lb. blue-liner was chosen by Sault Ste. Marie in the sixth round (108th overall) of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection Draft after enjoying a standout season with Vaughn Kings of the Greater Toronto Hockey League in 2008-09.

A native of Mississauga, ON, Sproul was a member of the Ontario Hockey’s League’s Second All-Rookie Team in 2010-11 and was named the Greyhounds’ Top Defenseman in 2011-12 after finishing tied for third amongst all OHL rearguards with 54 points (23G-31A) in 61 games.

Detroit Red Wings are Expected to set a Franchise Record by Making Their 21st Consecutive Playoff Appearance This Spring

Detroit, MI… The 11-time Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of clinching a playoff berth for the 21st straight year, setting a team record for consecutive post-season appearances in the process. Detroit tied their previous franchise high of 20 straight playoff appearances (originally set from 1938–39 through to 1957–58) last spring and appear poised to eclipse the mark in 2011-12, currently ranked fourth in the Western Conference (44-25-5) with eight games remaining on their regular season schedule.

RED WINGS RECALL CONKLIN FROM GRAND RAPIDS

… Detroit Faces the Rangers at New York’s Madison Square Garden Later Tonight …

Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today announced that goaltender Ty Conklin has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Conklin, 35, has made 12 appearances with the Griffins since being assigned to Grand Rapids on February 21, posting a record of 8-4-0 in addition to a 2.40 GAA and a SV% of .915. The 6’1”, 185-lb. netminder appeared in 11 games for Detroit earlier this season, earning three victories to go along with a 3.40 G.A.A. and an .878 SV%. Conklin is 94-66-16 (2.68 GAA, .906 SV%) in 211 career NHL games with Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Columbus and Edmonton.

Currently 44-25-4 on the 2011-12 NHL campaign, the Red Wings will square off with the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers (45-20-7) later tonight at Madison Square Garden (7:30 p.m. – NBCSN & AM 1270). Detroit will next play at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night (puck drop – 7:00 p.m.) versus the Carolina Hurricanes. RED WINGS ALUMNI TO SKATE IN SHAWN BURR FOUNDATION’S “HOCKEY CANCER CLASSIC”

… Alumni, players from Shawn Burr Foundation to face-off in charity benefit in Fraser, MI on March 17 …

Detroit, MI – Detroit Red Wings Alumni will match-up against players from the Shawn Burr Foundation this weekend at Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser, MI. The two teams of former professionals will skate against each other on Saturday, March 17 at 4 p.m. to support blood cancer research.

The “Hockey Cancer Classic” is supported by the Shawn Burr Foundation and will benefit both The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Care Center. Burr, a Red Wing from 1986-1995, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2011 and has since dedicated his charity to helping support cancer research.

The Detroit Red Wings Alumni team will feature past fan-favorites such as Darren McCarty, Dino Ciccarelli and Mickey Redmond. The club will compete against players representing the Shawn Burr Foundation, including former Quebec Nordiques defenseman Craig Wolanin. Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today announced that forward Gustav Nyquist and goaltender Jordan Pearce have been reassigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Nyquist, 22, appeared in both games for Detroit this weekend, collecting an assist on Darren Helm’s game-winning goal against the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena and adding another helper in Detroit’s 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday night at Bridgestone Arena. The Halmstad, Sweden, native has played in seven games for the Red Wings this season, notching three points (0-3-3) and two PIM. Pearce, 25, served as a backup to starting goaltender Joey MacDonald in Detroit’s last three games against Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Nashville.

Currently in possession of a 44-22-3 record, the Red Wings will travel to California today and prepare to take on the Los Angeles Kings (31-25-12) on Tuesday night at Staples Center (10:30 p.m. ET). GRIFFINS AND RED WINGS EXTEND AFFILIATION AGREEMENT THROUGH 2016-17

Detroit, MI… The Grand Rapids Griffins and Detroit Red Wings today announced a five-year extension of their affiliation agreement, ensuring that the relationship between Michigan’s premier hockey teams will continue through at least the 2016-17 season. The 10-year-old affiliation, currently in its final season of a second five-year deal, has helped produce a Stanley Cup and an AHL regular season championship, along with multiple division titles for both teams.

Geographically, with the two teams located just 160 miles apart, the affiliation is among the closest of all AHL-NHL pairings. That proximity has proved beneficial for Detroit on many occasions, as the Griffins have sent 46 players on to Hockeytown since 2002.

“The American League is critical for all NHL teams, and having a great relationship with Grand Rapids helps keep up competitive,” said Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland. “We’re all thrilled with our arrangement. As a former minor league player myself, it’s exciting to see 8,000 to 10,000 fans and a great atmosphere in the building each night. It’s a wonderful city and there is terrific support from the community as well as the ownership. It’s a real positive environment for our young players.”

Among other benefits to the Griffins, this new agreement transfers responsibility for all players and hockey operations staff – including coaches, equipment managers and trainers – to the Red Wings. Already, Detroit’s assistant general managers, Jim Nill and Ryan Martin, have been overseeing the Griffins’ day-to-day hockey operations since the departure of longtime Grand Rapids general manager Bob McNamara last summer.

Also, the Griffins will play their first-ever outdoor game as part of the Red Wings “Hockeytown Winter Festival” at Comerica Park in December, hosting the Toronto Marlies in the lead-up to the 2013 NHL Winter Classic between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium.

“We are proud to continue our partnership with one of the premier organizations in professional sports,” said Scott Gorsline, the Griffins’ chief operating officer. “Detroit is committed to developing its prospects in a winning environment. Given the Red Wings’ complete oversight of our hockey operations and their talented management team, we are confident that their remarkable ability to produce a Stanley Cup contender season after season will result in similar success for us at the AHL level.”

Over the last decade, the Griffins have won a pair of division titles and have twice advanced to the conference finals, most notably in 2005-06 when they captured the AHL’s Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as regular season champions.

Griffins fans have welcomed the Red Wings to Van Andel Arena for several events, including four Red & White intrasquad games – most recently in 2011 – and a “Wings for Lunch” practice in 2007. In addition, they’ve had the opportunity to watch stars such as Chris Chelios, Curtis Joseph, Manny Legace, Andreas Lilja and Chris Osgood play for the Griffins during conditioning stints. Other NHL veterans have been sent to bolster Grand Rapids’ lineup over time, including Ty Conklin, who has guided the Griffins to a 5-1 record since joining the club two weeks ago.

For the Red Wings, the impact of the affiliation has been unmistakable on the ice at Joe Louis Arena. The names of nine Grand Rapids alumni were engraved on the Stanley Cup following Detroit’s 2008 title, and 15 current or former Griffins played a part in the Red Wings’ recent NHL record-breaking 23-game home winning streak. Every game during that incredible run was backstopped by one of the Griffins’ top two all-time leaders in wins (Jimmy Howard or Joey MacDonald), and in each of the last five games during the streak, the majority of Red Wings who played were Griffins alumni.

In all, 19 of the 30 players who’ve skated for the parent club this season are former or current Griffins, and 12 Detroit regulars logged at least one complete season in Grand Rapids prior to earning a full-time job with the Red Wings: Howard, MacDonald, Jonathan Ericsson, Jakub Kindl, Niklas Kronwall, Kyle Quincey, Justin Abdelkader, Cory Emmerton, Valtteri Filppula, Darren Helm, Jiri Hudler and Jan Mursak.

goaltender Ray Emery have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week
ending March 4.

FIRST STAR – RYAN MILLER, G, BUFFALO SABRES
Miller posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.00 goals-against average, .974 save
percentage and two shutouts as the Sabres (30-27-8, 68 points) moved within
two points of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. He began the week
with back-to-back shutouts, making 43 saves in a 2-0 win at the Anaheim
Ducks Feb. 29 and 39 saves in a 1-0 victory at the San Jose Sharks March 1.
Miller then recorded 32 saves in a 5-3 win at the Vancouver Canucks March
5, stretching his shutout streak to 155:37 before David Booth scored at
15:37 of the second period. The 2009-10 Vezina Trophy winner is 22-17-5
with a 2.59 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and five shutouts
in 46 appearances. He is 6-0-2 in his past eight starts and 11-2-3 in his
past 16 decisions dating to Jan. 24.

SECOND STAR – NIKLAS KRONWALL, D, DETROIT RED WINGS
Kronwall tied for the League scoring lead and led all NHL defensemen

with seven points (two goals, five assists) as the Red Wings won two of

three games to keep pace with the St. Louis Blues for first place in the

Central Division. Kronwall provided Detroit with offense from the blueline

in the absence of injured captain and seven-time Norris Trophy winner
Nicklas Lidstrom, beginning with one goal and two assists in a 5-2 win at
the Columbus Blue Jackets Feb. 28.

He had his second consecutive three-point game with three assists in a 6-0 victory against the Minnesota Wild March 2 and scored Detroit’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks March 4. The 31-year-old Stockholm, Sweden native has 31 points,

including a career-high 14 goals, in 66 games.


THIRD STAR – RAY EMERY, G, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
Emery went 3-0-0 with a 1.13 goals-against average and .959 save
percentage to help the Blackhawks (36-24-7, 79 points) tighten their grip
on sixth place in the Western Conference. He allowed one goal in 40 minutes
of relief as Chicago rallied for a 5-4 victory against the Toronto Maple
Leafs Feb. 29, stopped 25 shots in a 2-1 win at the Ottawa Senators March 2
and made 23 saves in a 2-1 victory at the Detroit Red Wings March 4.
Playing in his first season with the Blackhawks, Emery has a 14-8-2 record
with a 2.58 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in 28
appearances.

Detroit, MI...The Detroit Red Wings today announced that they have recalled defenseman Doug Janik, forward Chris Conner and goaltender Jordan Pearce from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. All three players will travel with the Red Wings today to Philadelphia to prepare for tomorrow night’s showdown with the Flyers (7:00 p.m).

Janik, 31, was originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round (55th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Janik has registered 18 points (3-15-18) and 18 PIM in 182 career NHL games with the Sabres, Canadiens, Stars, Lightning and Red Wings. The 6’2”, 210-lb. blue-liner was signed by Detroit as an unrestricted free agent on July 8, 2009, and has appeared in 21 games for the Red Wings over the course of the last three seasons, tallying two points (0-2-2) and 25 PIM. Janik has appeared in 56 games for Grand Rapids this season, collecting 26 points (7-19-26) and 57 PIM.

Conner, 28, was signed by Detroit as a free agent on July 7, 2011. He has appeared in seven games for the Red Wings this season, collecting three points (1-2-3) and a +2 rating. The 28-year-old native of Livonia, Mich., has also skated in 41 games for the Griffins, tallying 36 points (11-25-36) and 16 PIM.

Pearce, 25, is currently in his fourth season with the Griffins. He was originally signed by Detroit to an entry-level deal on April 10, 2009, and inked a two-year contract extension last summer on July 7, 2011. In 17 games with Grand Rapids this season he has posted a 3-7-1 record, 3.53 GAA and .874 save percentage. He notched his lone shutout of the season on November 11, 2011, making 29 saves in an 8-0 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs.

RED WINGS' WIVES AND GIRLFRIENDS TO HOST PUCK DRAW

… Mystery Puck Draw on March 4th to Benefit the McCrimmon Family …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings’ wives and girlfriends will hold a mystery puck draw on the concourse at this Sunday’s home game (March 4) against the Chicago Blackhawks. When doors open at 2:30 p.m., fans are encouraged to visit the puck draw tables on the concourse behind Section 126.

Fans have the opportunity to purchase a select puck from an assortment of 300 hockey pucks signed by members of the 2011-12 team. Pucks cost $25 apiece and must be paid for by cash or check. Each puck has been signed by a Red Wings player and packaged in a black box to conceal the autograph. The fan who opens the box with a puck signed in gold by Niklas Kronwall will meet the Wings’ defenseman after the game. Each puck comes with a certificate of authenticity.

The proceeds of Sunday’s puck draw will benefit the family of former Red Wings player and assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, who tragically passed away in a plane crash on Sept. 7, 2011, along with the rest of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team (KHL). The Red Wings have worn a special red and blue patch on their jerseys throughout the 2011-12 season in honor of the three former Red Wings who were on the plane: McCrimmon, defenseman Ruslan Salei and goaltending prospect Stefan Liv.

The team has raised more than $14,000 for the Love for Lokomotiv initiative through the sale of red ‘Love for Lokomotiv’ wristbands this season. The Wings have also collected over $54,000 for the families of the three former Red Wings by selling game-worn jerseys from opening night as well as the game on Feb. 12.

Originally selected by Detroit in the opening round (27th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Smith made his Red Wings debut on November 17, 2011, in a road game versus the San Jose Sharks. In three career NHL games, the 6’1”, 199-lb. blue-liner has recorded 0G-2A-2P-4PIM. Last season, Smith was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team after registering 12G-20A-32P-124PIM in 63 appearances with Grand Rapids.

Red Wings Continue Road Losing Streak

The Detroit Red Wings dropped a hard fought game against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Windy City tonigh, making it three straight losses on the road putting the Wings below .500 on the road for the season.

Valtteri Filppula opened scoring tonight by netting the Wings' loan goal early on the power play. Chicago’s Jimmy Hayes tied things up halfway through the second period before Marcus Kruger stuffed the puck into the net early in the third for the game winner.

The Wings came out strong and dominated the Blackhawks through the first 20 minutes; unfortunately they never came back out of the dressing room after the first and instead spend the next 40 minutes chasing the ‘Hawks. Chicago saw three breakaways in the second period alone. Jimmy Howard in his return from a broken finger came up huge for the Wings and kept them in the game. Chicago did an excellent job clearing away pucks in front of the net and limiting second chances. The Wings also looked lost without Pavel Datsyuk. Many times players were standing still in the offensive zone waiting for that magical pass that Datsyuk provides. Instead, the Wings provided a number of free pucks for Chicago.

In Play! Man of the Game: Jimmy Howard. Without Howard’s antics in net tonight, Chicago would have walked away with a 12-1 win. Howard showed that a couple weeks off and a broken finger won’t slow him down.

Ken Holland Talks with In Play! About the Kyle Quincy Deal

In Play! Magazine caught up with Ken Holland, the Red Wings General Manager, in the bowels of the United Center in Chicago and Holland was kind enough to answer some questions regarding the Kyle Quincy trade for the magazine.

In Play: What was the motivation behind the move today to pick up Quincy in this three-way deal?

Holland: Kyle is a good NHL defenseman. He’ll add some depth to the blue line and help with a deep run into the playoffs. In retrospect, we shouldn’t have let him go a few years ago, but we had an abundance of D-men and we felt he’d be better off getting developed somewhere in the NHL than in Grand Rapids. The truth is that this deal worked for Colorado and it worked for Steve [Yzerman] (the General Manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning) to have this 1^st round pick.

In Play: Is there somewhat of a danger in looking back at the past rather than looking forward by acquiring a former player and giving up a first round pick?

Holland: It worked well for us when we reacquired [Igor] Larionov from Florida in the 90’s. We also brought back [Chris] Osgood and [Dominic] Hasek. Sometime’s there’s a benefit to bringing a guy back in who knows the system and might have something new to offer to the table.

In Play: Do you see it as a problem giving up a 1^st round pick for what could be a rental?

Holland: When you give up a 1^st round pick you’re looking for a guy who you plan to have next year. A 2^nd round pick is a rental. I’d give up any first round pick to get a 26 year old NHL defenseman. Quincy has at least eight more productive seasons at the NHL level in his career. There’s no guarantee that a draft pick will ever play in this league. It’s a chance at a proven player over a possible player. You’re not going to find a magical player picking in the 20-30 pick range, so why not get a guy you know will show up every night and could wind up being a top six d-man for ten more seasons?

In Play: Now you’ve got eight defensemen, does today’s move free up some movement for one of the guys struggling to make the lineup?

Holland: This is the NHL and you can’t have too many defensemen. In 2005 we set to rebuilding our core and this is now the fruition of that. I feel we’re done when it comes to our D. We’re set in goal. Whether we’ll make a move on the forward aspect remains to be seen with what become available. Obviously having [Pavel] Datsyuk out of a couple weeks will be a test to see how our forward lines react.

In Play: Was this deal a preemptive move in case things fall through with [Brad] Stuart over the summer?

Holland: Yes. We hope everything works out on that front and we get Stuart resigned, but there’s nothing wrong with having too many D-men. We’ve got eight tested NHL quality defensemen and at least one NHL ready defenseman down in Grand Rapids. I hope this is a problem we can continue to have and I hope to have Stuart and Nicklas Lidstrom come the fall.

RED WINGS FANS GIVE BACK AT OUTDOOR PRACTICE AT CLARK PARK

… Two Thousand Fans Attended Practice on Feb. 18th as the Red Wings Celebrated Hockey Weekend Across America …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings hosted their first outdoor practice at Detroit’s Clark Park rink earlier today, Feb. 18, with more than 2,000 fans in attendance. The practice was part of the team’s celebration of Hockey Weekend Across America and their ongoing Hockeytown Thanks initiative.

In order to attend the event, fans were required to make one of three charitable donations. Thanks to the generosity of the fans at Clark Park, the Wings collected:
874 food items, primarily canned goods, for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan
$1,799 in cash donations to benefit Clark Park Coalition
189 pieces of used hockey equipment, including skates and helmets, for Clark Park and the Detroit Hockey Association’s hockey programs

The Red Wings’ outdoor practice, which was co-sponsored by Tim Hortons and Kroger, concluded with a TimBits minor hockey team scrimmaging alongside Red Wings players. Following the team’s practice, Clark Park held an open public skate courtesy of Kroger.

… Fun-Filled Event Presented in Partnership with Meijer and Coca-Cola; Free

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings, Coca-Cola and Meijer have teamed up to present 2012 Red Wings Fan Day at Joe Louis Arena (Sunday, March 11, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.). This year’s Fan Day at The Joe will feature photo opportunities with the Red Wings’ 2008 Stanley Cup championship banner as well as Al Sobotka’s famed zamboni, autographs from members of the Red Wings Alumni Association, multiple interactive hockey zones, an open skate on the main ice surface at JLA and a wide variety of prizes and promotions for fans of all ages.

In order to obtain tickets to this fun-filled event, citizens of Hockeytown must attend an upcoming Red Wings alumni appearance at one of five Meijer locations throughout southeastern Michigan. All events will begin at 5:00 p.m. and last two hours, with alumni signing autographs from 6:00-7:00 p.m. The first 150 fans to arrive will receive a wristband guaranteeing them an autograph. Tickets to Fan Day at The Joe will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of four (4) tickets per family. RED WINGS TO SELL FEBRUARY 12TH GAME JERSEYS WITH COMMEMORATIVE LOKOMOTIV PATCH

… Proceeds from Jersey Sales to Benefit Families of Former Red Wings …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings have worn a special patch on their jerseys throughout the 2011-12 season in honor of three former Red Wings who were members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team (KHL) who died tragically in a plane crash this past September in Russia. The Red Wings announced today its plans to sell the team’s white game-worn jerseys from this Sunday’s home game, Feb. 12, to raise money for the families of the three former Red Wings lost in the Lokomotiv tragedy.

Recognized on the patch are the initials of Brad McCrimmon, the Red Wings Assistant Coach from 2008-2011 and Red Wings defenseman from 1990-1993; Ruslan Salei, Red Wings defenseman last season; and Stefan Liv, who was drafted by the Red Wings in 2000 and was a goaltending prospect from 2000-2007. The patch contains the initials BM*RS*SL in red letters along with a blue stripe. Red and blue are the Lokomotiv team colors.

Each jersey contains a uniquely numbered tag imprinted on the inside, guaranteeing that the jersey is a part of the Red Wings set worn by the club on Feb. 12 and that game only. The tag includes the phrase “Love for Lokomotiv” and a barcode so that the jersey can be tracked. Each jersey remains without an autograph but can be autographed and personalized by the individual player if requested by the purchaser. All purchasers will also receive an 8x10 photograph from the Feb. 12, 2012, game vs. Philadelphia depicting the jersey being worn.

Earlier this season, the team sold its set of red jerseys worn during the season-opener on Oct. 7, 2011, bringing in $15,300 for the families of the three former Red Wings. The white jerseys worn during this Sunday’s game will be available for purchase starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 13.

Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs in Alumni Showdown at Comerica Park is Centerpiece of Hockeytown Winter Festival™, a Celebration of Hockey Expected to Attract 250,000 Fans to Downtown Detroit.

NEW YORK (February 9, 2012) – The Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium on the University of Michigan campus in the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® on Tuesday, Jan. 1, the National Hockey League announced today. Nicknamed “The Big House,” the stadium is the largest in North America. It is anticipated that the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® could set an all-time world attendance record for a hockey game.

"The Red Wings' tradition of excellence, Detroit's passion for hockey and the glorious history of the Maple Leafs create a Winter Classic scenario for the ages," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "The meeting of these two 'Original Six' rivals, at this iconic venue, will lift this Winter Classic to incomparable heights. The demand to be there will be so great that this event could only be held at 'The Big House.'"

In concert with the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®, beginning in mid-December Comerica Park in downtown Detroit will be home to a celebration of hockey titled the Hockeytown Winter Festival™. The main attraction of the festival will be an ice rink built on the Comerica Park field where a special game between notable Red Wings and Maple Leafs alumni – the NHL Alumni Showdown – will be played.

The outdoor rink at Comerica Park will feature games between teams representing every level of hockey and opportunities for open skating for the public. Over a quarter of a million fans are expected to watch youth games, high school hockey games, sled hockey games, AHL games, OHL games and more. The Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings, will play the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs, on the Comerica Park rink. For the first time in its history, the Great Lakes Invitational will be played outdoors as Michigan Tech, the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan University will be part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival. Also, the ballpark will host two OHL matchups: the Windsor Spitfires vs. Saginaw Spirit and the Plymouth Whalers vs. London Knights.

“Mike and Marian Ilitch are deeply committed to their beloved Detroit. That commitment has never wavered,” Commissioner Bettman added. “The Hockeytown Winter Festival is just the latest example of their passion for their city and for hockey.”

The 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® continues the tradition the NHL® has established of hosting a regular-season game outdoors at the onset of the new year to celebrate the origin and traditions of hockey. This season in Philadelphia, both the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® between the Flyers and New York Rangers and the alumni game two days prior attracted sellout crowds. More than 100,000 fans visited Spectator Plaza, the official outdoor hockey festival adjacent to the ballpark.

Two members of the NHL’s “Original Six®,” the Red Wings and Maple Leafs are longtime rivals, having first played against each other on Jan. 4, 1927 as the Toronto St. Patricks defeated the Detroit Cougars 2-1 in a game near Detroit. Just over a month later, the Toronto team was re-named the Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs captured a 4-3 victory on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 in the only regular-season meeting of the teams this season, marking the 644th regular-season contest between the franchises. As of today, each is the second most-common regular-season opponent for the other. The Maple Leafs have faced only the Montreal Canadiens more often; the Red Wings only the Chicago Blackhawks.

Not only is the Detroit-Toronto hockey rivalry a storied one, it is a competitive one. All-time during the regular season, Detroit (275-273-93-3) has captured 646 points against Toronto, holding an advantage by the slimmest of margins over Toronto’s 645 versus Detroit (276-275-93-0).

More than just a regular-season phenomenon, the rivalry remains as profound and closely contested in the Stanley Cup® Playoffs. The 117 playoff games between the franchises is the second most in NHL history (Boston vs. Montreal=170). The Red Wings have won 59 of those games to the Maple Leafs’ 58, outscoring Toronto 321-311. However, the Maple Leafs hold the edge in terms of playoff series victories, 12-11.

The 2011-12 versions of the teams feature some of the top talent in the NHL. The Red Wings are led by captain Nicklas Lidstrom, the seven-time and defending Norris Trophy winner who also is an 11-time NHL All-Star. Lidstrom, along with Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Tomas Holmstrom, Jimmy Howard and more, have the Red Wings fighting for top spot in the Western Conference once again.

Michigan Stadium re-claimed the title of the largest stadium in the U.S. after the completion of seating renovations in 2010 increased its official capacity to 109,901. The historic home of Wolverine football easily becomes the largest venue to host the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®.

The five previous editions of the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® comprise five of the top six most watched regular-season NHL games in the U.S. in the past 37 years. The 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® in Pittsburgh on NBC Sports aired in primetime and was the most-watched NHL regular season game in the U.S. in 36 years with an average of 4.5 million viewers. The event also drew the largest audience on CBC for any of the U.S.-based outdoor NHL games.

WINGS TO CELEBRATE HOCKEY WEEKEND ACROSS AMERICA WITH HISTORIC OUTDOOR PRACTICE

… Tim Hortons and Kroger Sponsor Red Wings Skate at Downtown Detroit’s Clark Park; 24 Hours of Hockey Action Planned for Joe Louis Arena …

Detroit, MI… As part of Hockey Weekend Across America and their ongoing Hockeytown Thanks initiative, the Detroit Red Wings will be presenting a variety of hockey events throughout the duration of Saturday, February 18. Teams and players from all ages and skill levels will be participating in this unique daylong endeavor, which will be highlighted by an outdoor practice at downtown Detroit’s Clark Park featuring the entirety of the Red Wings roster.

The Red Wings outdoor practice at Detroit’s Clark Park (between Vernor & I-75) will have special observation areas installed specifically for fans to catch all of the action beginning at noon (gates open at 11:00 a.m.). The first 2,000 citizens of Hockeytown to arrive on location will be able to watch the Red Wings skate for approximately one hour as they prepare for a Sunday home game versus San Jose. Fans wishing to attend the Red Wings’ historic outdoor practice on the 18th will be required to make one of three charitable donations upon entering the facility:

1) Canned goods to benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan OR
2) At least $2 cash/person in support of the Clark Park Coalition OR
3) Pre-owned hockey equipment to be used by Clark Park & the Detroit Hockey Association

Co-sponsored by Tim Hortons and Kroger, the Red Wings’ outdoor skate at Clark Park will feature a pre-selected TimBits minor hockey team taking part in drills alongside the reigning NHL Central Division champs for a portion of practice. Hot chocolate and coffee will be made available to attendees of this event courtesy of Tim Hortons. Fifty pairs of V.I.P. lanyards granting holders exclusive access to the Tim Hortons Hot Zone at Clark Park will be given away by Tim Hortons over the course of the next two weeks. Amway, presenting sponsor of the Detroit Red Wings, will be making special arrangements for 100 local members of the Boys & Girls Club to attend the open practice. Furthermore, upon the conclusion of Red Wings practice, an open public skate will be held at Clark Park courtesy of Kroger. In order to participate, skaters must fill out a waiver on site and have their own equipment with them. Free parking for this event will be available at Western International High School (1500 Scotten Street) and Earhart Elementary-Middle School (1000 Scotten Street). Indian Trails Transportation will be running complimentary shuttles to and from Clark Park.

In addition to the outdoor practice, the Red Wings will be presenting a 24-hour hockey marathon at Joe Louis Arena beginning at one minute past midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning as part of their Hockey Weekend Across America celebration. Members of the FOX Sports Detroit Girls, who will also be attending the Red Wings’ Clark Park practice, will be on hand to drop the puck at midnight to officially kick off the proceedings.

Adult squad games will be held between the hours of 12:01 and 7:00 a.m. at The Joe on February 18. The Detroit Red Wings Foundation will also be presenting two one-hour-long ‘Try Hockey for Free’ clinics at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. (http://www.maha.org/TryHockey.aspx), which will be preceded by a USA Hockey American Development Model Clinic (http://www.usahockey.com/adm).

Following the back-to-back clinics, there will be youth hockey games staged throughout the afternoon. The Michigan Catholic High School State Championships (Detroit Catholic Central vs. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) will take place at The Joe from 7:30 – 10:00 p.m., with the day wrapping up with a two-hour adult hockey session. Information on participating in any of the youth or adult games at JLA can be obtained by calling Adam Dubois at 313-396-7451.

In the event of inclement weather, the Red Wings practice will be held within the same time parameters at Joe Louis Arena. Parking will be available at a cost of $5 per vehicle at both the main JLA garage and the venue’s adjacent Riverfront lot. The public skate portion of the event will be cancelled if the open practice is held at The Joe.
