Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defenseman Brendan Smith has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL). Smith, 23, has appeared in 47 games for the Griffins this season, recording 32 points (10G-22A) in addition to 74 penalty minutes and a +7 rating.
Originally selected by Detroit in the opening round (27th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Smith made his Red Wings debut on November 17, 2011, in a road game versus the San Jose Sharks. In three career NHL games, the 6’1”, 199-lb. blue-liner has recorded 0G-2A-2P-4PIM. Last season, Smith was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team after registering 12G-20A-32P-124PIM in 63 appearances with Grand Rapids.
Currently leading the Central Division with a record of 41-19-3, Detroit will battle the Columbus Blue Jackets (18-37-7) tomorrow night at Nationwide Arena, 7:00 p.m.puck drop.
The Red Wings’ next home game is Friday night versus the Minnesota Wild (puck drop – 7:30 p.m.).
