...Four-Time Stanley Cup Champion To Return To Red Wings As Pro Scout…

Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, announced today that he will retire from the National Hockey League after 16 NHL seasons. He appeared in 1,072 games during his career, one of only 251 players in NHL history to reach the 1,000-game milestone.

Maltby, 37, was originally a third round draft pick (65th overall) of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He spent parts of three seasons in Edmonton before a trade deadline deal in 1996 brought him to Detroit in exchange for defenseman Dan McGillis. Maltby would spend the rest of his career in the Motor City, playing 908 games in a Red Wings sweater, tied for seventh-most in franchise history with former teammate Sergei Fedorov. He finished with 128 career goals (107 with Detroit), 132 assists (115), 260 points (222) and 867 penalty minutes (683). Maltby also appeared in 169 postseason games for the Red Wings, fourth-most in team history behind only Nicklas Lidstrom (247), Kris Draper (212) and Steve Yzerman (196). He won four Stanley Cups donning the winged wheel (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008) and became a fan favorite thanks to his agitating style. He was a member of the infamous ‘Grind Line’ in Detroit. He became the 239th player in NHL history to play in 1,000 career games on February 27, 2009 against the Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena. He played his final game in the National Hockey League on February 13, 2010, scoring Detroit’s first goal in a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Maltby will stay with the Red Wings organization as a pro scout. His responsibilities will include scouting teams at both the NHL and AHL levels, providing insight on player personnel decisions including trades and free agent acquisitions, as well as assisting in preparation for upcoming opponents. Kirk and his wife, Wendy, along with their three children, will continue to reside in the Detroit area.
