NHL.com has released its plays of the year in a combination of highlight reels that are heavy with Red Wing clips. In fact, more clips involve the Wings than any other team. Pavel Datsyuk was awarded the Shootout goal of the year for his lob shot over Antti Niemi, but Datsyuk also was given his own personal highlight reel on the website. The Wings also were featured, in a bad way, on the top goaltending reel helping four goalies amass five of the 10 clips.
The Wings’ January shootout loss to Chicago (which featured Datsyuk and Bertuzzi’s unforgettable shootout dekes) was one of the games of the year and Niklas Kronwall was honored for his unforgettable one-skate penalty kill shift. However, there is one video that the honored Red Wing could live without. Patrick Eaves was “honored” with the blooper of the year for his infamous shootout deke that left him, and not the goalie, face first on the ice.
