After giving up an early shorthanded goal, the Detroit Red Wings stood by and watched the Phoenix Coyotes run away with this game, losing 5-1 and now must travel back to Phoenix for game seven.

Lauri Korpikoski broke open the sheet tonight with a shorthanded goal in the first. Mathieu Schneider gave Phoenix a two goal lead before Brad Stuart scored. Then Radim Vrbata, Wojtek Wolski and Tyler Pyatt pushed the Coyotes out to a four goal lead. Darren Helm cut the lead to three late in the third but Detroit failed to muster any more goals.

The Red Wings just got caught standing around on the ice tonight and didn’t get the goaltending from Jimmy Howard that they needed. Prior to this afternoon, the turning point in this series had been Jimmy Howard’s mask-less save during game four. Phoenix shifted the series’ momentum back to themselves today after killing three early penalties which included over a minute of five on three play. Justin Abdelkader found himself throwing punches twice in this game.

In Play! Man of the Game: Ilya Bryzgalov. Bryzgalov stopped 31 of Detroit’s 33 shots, most of which were big saves.
