... Notre Dame Forward Becomes Wings’ Fourth First Round Selection in Last 10 Years …

Detroit, MI... The Detroit Red Wings selected Riley Sheahan with the 21st overall pick in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft on Friday night. Red Wings Assistant General Manager Jim Nill announced the selection at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. This weekend’s draft marks the first time the event has been held in the state of California.

“Riley is a big, strong centerman and was the only true freshman in college hockey last season,” said Nill. “We project him to be a power forward in the NHL. He was a prolific scorer at St. Catherines of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.”

This marks the first forward the Wings have selected in a first round of an NHL Draft since taking Curtis Bowen in 1992 and Martin Lapointe in 1991.

Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk Gets Selke Trophy; No Calder Trophy for Jimmy Howard

By AJ Petronzi

Pavel Datsyuk has won his third consecutive Selke Trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward in the NHL, on the same night he failed to receive his fourth straight Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play. Datsyuk, who led the NHL in takeaways for the regular season, finished the season with twice as many penalty minutes than Lady Byng winner Martin St. Louis, who had finished second to Datsyuk the last three seasons.

Jimmy Howard also failed to secure his first NHL trophy as Buffalo’s Tyler Myers took home the Calder Trophy on Wednesday night. Howard was an underdog in the race for rookie of the year due to being eight years older than Myers.

HOCKEY HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2010 INDUCTEES

TORONTO (June 22, 2010) – Bill Hay, Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors, Jim Gregory and Pat Quinn, Co-Chairmen of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee, announced today that Dino Ciccarelli, Cammi Granato and Angela James have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player Category. In the Builder Category, Jimmy Devellano and the late Daryl “Doc” Seaman was elected. The vote took place today at the annual meeting of the Selection Committee in Toronto.

“The Hockey Hall of Fame is proud to welcome these five hockey legends as Honoured Members,” said Jim Gregory. “Their contributions to the game of hockey are well documented and their election to the Hockey Hall of Fame is richly deserved.”

A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Dino Ciccarelli played four seasons for the London Knights setting a team record for goals with 72 in 1977-78. An undrafted free agent, he made his debut with the Minnesota North Stars in 1980-81, played nine seasons with the Stars, leading the team in scoring five times. Overall, he played 19 NHL seasons with five teams recording 608 goals and 592 assists in 1,232 games played.

“This is a tremendous honour that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” said Ciccarelli. “I really appreciate the support of my coaches, the fans and mostly importantly my family throughout my 19 year career.”

Cammi Granato was ECAC Player of the Year three consecutive seasons from 1991-93, while playing for Providence College. She then played in Canada for the Concordia Stingers, helping that team to three Quebec titles. Granato was also a 15-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Team beginning in 1990 and led Team USA to the gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics.

“I dreamed of being in the NHL my entire life and this certainly makes up for those dreams,” said Granato. “Being amongst the first women to play at college and later at the Olympics, it certainly was worthwhile being a hockey pioneer”.

Toronto native Angela James starred in the 1970’s and early 1980’s in the Central Ontario Women’s League and was the league’s leading scorer for eight seasons and MVP on six occasions. A medalist in 12 National Championships, she was MVP in eight of them. Angela has also won four world championship gold medals (1990, 1992, 1994 and 1997).

“On behalf of everyone in women’s hockey, I am truly honoured,” said James. “As a kid I went to the Hall and was in awe of those who had been inducted. I am delighted to to be able to join them.”

In the Builder Category, long-time Detroit Red Wings executive, Jim Devellano and posthumously a founding owner of the Calgary Flames, Daryl “Doc” Seaman were honoured.

“I’d like to thank the Selection Committee for naming me,” said Devellano. “This game is all about the people and since Lynn Patrick gave me my first break I’ve been fortunate to be associated with great people.”

The 2010 Induction Celebration will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Detroit, MI... The Detroit Red Wings announced today that the team has signed Executive Vice President and General Manager, Ken Holland, and Vice President and Assistant General Manager, Jim Nill, to five-year contract extensions. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the two deals were not disclosed.

"Kenny and Jim have been the core of our front office for well over a decade and cornerstone to this franchise’s success," said Owner Mike Ilitch. "Marian and I feel strongly that stability is key to success for any organization and having these new agreements in place with these two top-notch NHL executives is important to the Red Wings organization and its future. They are committed professionals and outstanding individuals, and we have great respect for their respective talents. We're pleased they will continue to lead our hockey club for the next five years."

Holland, 54, has served as Detroit’s general manager for the past 13 seasons. Prior to his role in team management, Holland was a player and scout for the organization. He has been with the Red Wings in various capacities for the past 27 seasons.

Nill, 52, is entering his 13th season as assistant general manager of the Red Wings. In his current role, Nill’s duties include directing Detroit’s amateur scouting department and overseeing all selections made at the annual NHL Entry Draft. Prior to becoming Detroit’s assistant general manager in 1998, he served as director of player development for the Red Wings for four seasons. His efforts in both roles directly contributed to Detroit’s 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 Stanley Cup championships. Nill has played an integral part in selecting several late round gems for the Red Wings including current franchise cornerstones Pavel Datsyuk (sixth round, 171st overall in 1998) and Henrik Zetterberg (seventh round, 210th overall in 1999). Nill spent the final two and a half seasons of his nine-year NHL career in a Red Wings uniform.

He is the only European-born captain to lead his team to a Stanley Cup championship (2008) and was the first European-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP in 2002. Lidstrom is a four-time Stanley Cup champion (1997, 1998, 2002, 2008), holds the franchise single-season records for assists (64) and points (80) by a defenseman, ranks fourth in Red Wings history in games played (1,412) and points (1,046), and has the highest plus-minus rating (+431) since 1991-92, his first year in the NHL. He was recently named the NHL’s player of the decade (2000-09) by both the Sporting News and SportsIllustrated.com.

“I’ve been fortunate to watch Nick play every day for over a decade and I believe he is the best two-way defenseman in the world,” said Holland. “We’re thrilled that Nick has decided to come back and play for another season.”

In 2009-10, Lidstrom recorded his 1,000th career point when he assisted on Henrik Zetterberg’s game-winning goal on October 15, 2009 vs. the Los Angeles Kings. He became just the eighth defenseman in NHL history to achieve the milestone. Lidstrom also played in his 1,400th career game on March 19, 2010 at Edmonton, becoming just the 12th defenseman and the 31st player overall to accomplish the feat. He recently played in his 247th career postseason game on May 8, 2010 vs. the San Jose Sharks in Game Five of the Western Conference Semifinals, tying him with Patrick Roy for second all-time, trailing only former teammate, Chris Chelios (266).
