Rod Marrinelli Answers Tough Questions At Final Press Conference.

In Play! has a very interesting transcript from Rod Marrinelli's final press conference.

Find out what Marinelli says about...

-If 0-16 was too much of a loss for him to keep his job?
-What he would do differently if he got another head coaching job?
-Iif he's spoken to Matt Millen recently?
-If the 'losing culture' in this city as far as the expectation to lose was worse than he expected?
-What else was missing besides work ethic that caused this team to go 0-16?
-If he thinks he's leaving this team better than he found it?

Three-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Smith Honored As
2008 USA Basketball Female Athlete Of The Year

-- Smith Eligible For 2008 U.S. Olympic Committee SportsWoman Of The Year Award --

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 29, 2008) -- Katie Smith, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and co-captain of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that captured the USA’s fourth consecutive gold medal, has been selected the 2008 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year, USA Basketball today announced. As such, Smith will be nominated by USA Basketball for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Committee SportsWoman of the Year. The selection was made by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.

“This is a huge honor, it’s a surprise to me, but it’s very much appreciated,” said Smith. “There are so many bigger names, like Diana (Taurasi), Lisa (Leslie) winning her fourth gold, Tina (Thompson) putting up big numbers, it’s not that we’re not equal as players on the team, but in my career this kind of thing hasn’t happened a whole lot. I got what I wanted in a sense of being a part of those teams, winning gold medals and enjoying the overall experience. I love what I do and have enjoyed all my opportunities to represent USA Basketball. Obviously people saw that I cared, that I worked hard, and I appreciate that.

“What we always preach with USA Basketball is that it’s one team, one goal. It’s all about winning and doing whatever is needed, whether you play or don’t play, score or play defense. That’s what I tried to do throughout my USA Basketball days.

“This is a bonus and definitely a surprise, but very much appreciated. It’s neat to know that people do see what you do, the time you spend and the things you put into it. It’s not always about the flashy highlights, it’s the grunt work and a lot of us do that, from the players to the coaches and the staff. A lot of grunt work goes into what we do to be successful and it makes you feel good that people notice.”

DETROIT, Mich. (December 19, 2008) - Officials for the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix announced today that the 2009 event will be postponed due to the difficult economic conditions prevalent in southeast Michigan and across the nation.

“The economic environment that our region, state and country faces, both today and in 2009, is difficult,” said Roger Penske, Chairman of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. “It is unfortunate that we must postpone the 2009 Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix as sponsorship opportunities and support has proven to be very challenging for the event in the near term.”

The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix has brought tremendous benefit to Belle Isle Park and to the region since the event returned world-class auto racing back to the Motor City for the first time in more than six years in 2007. Both the 2007 and 2008 races established themselves as one of Detroit’s most popular summertime events, featuring both the American Le Mans Series and the IndyCar Series.

0-13 And The Lions Are Headed For The Record Books

0-13 And The Lions Are Headed For The Record Books

Well after another disappointing loss the Lions are no closer to winning "a" game than winning the Superbowl.

And by looking in the stands today it was evident that Lions fans are done spending their money on this football team for the rest of this season.

Things seem to be par for the course according to Coach Marinelli, in his opening statement at the post game press conference he says, "We played well for most of the game and when we had a chance and needed to stop them, we didn't get that done. So that kind of sums it up."

The Lions were within six yards of the goal line on three separate occasions and failed to score a touchdown. It seems that the redzone might as well be the twilight zone for the Lions offence...their inept attempts to finish a scoring drive are the hallmark of this team.

Marinelli feels the same way, "We had to get touchdowns I felt. In this league, when you've got a chance to get touchdowns, you have to get them and we were unable to do that." Marinelli goes on to say "I decided with the staff early in the week - I thought we did that at Carolina also. Once we crossed (mid-field) I wanted to go into fourth down mode because I felt going into the game we needed touchdowns big time. I didn't quite know how we were going to play defensively-we had some guys out still. It didn't work."

There was a bright spot though, and that is Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

Avery Out $126,000 For 15 Second Outburst!

December 5, 2008

In Play! Magazine took part in teleconference today with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman concerning the six game suspension of Sean Avery for his comments in Calgary this past week.

When asked about how he determined the length of the suspension Bettman says, "It was the appropriate response."

Does Avery face more punishment from his team? Bettman says, "It's up to the Dallas Stars whether or not they suspend him further"

Bettman says the NHL does not tolerate this type of behavior and was concerned that parents of small children would have to explain to them what sloppy seconds means and this is not how the NHL wants to portray itself.

According to Bettman Avery has been warned several times by the NHL within the last year including Colin Campbell and Bettman himself!

While listening to Bettman it seems Avery is skating on thin ice with the NHL brass and the next incident could prove more costly than just six games, Bettman says "Players in this league are held accountable on and off the ice."

An ESPN reporter asked if this had been Avery's first offence would he still have received the six game sit down to which Bettman replied "He (Avery) was warned by the NHL twice already."

So where does this leave Avery now that he's in the limelight?

Bettman says "Avery will be held to a higher standard as a repeat offender."

Bettman says he found out about the Avery comments almost instantly. He has two monitors on his desk that are on constantly and that bad news travels fast. The Commissioner goes on to say, "Somebody in the office told me to punch this up (link) on my screen and that I wasn't going to like it."

Avery just signed a four year $15.5 million contract with the Stars this past summer so his current suspension (not including endorsement deals) breaks down to around $21,000 per game or $126,000 for his comment.

I wonder if it was worth it?

THE LIONS...WOE IS DETROIT by Drew Lane

The Lions...Woe Is Detroit.
by Drew Lane
for In Play! Magazine

Is it possible the Lions have reached an all time low in 2008? Occasionally, it is possible to look deeply into a roster destined to win two or three games and see a future based on young talent. Rookies often need to make their mistakes and “learn how to win.” This is not the case with this year’s model.

Remember Jimmy Johnson’s 1-15 Cowboys? Within a year it was not difficult to see a bright future. While the Lion’s of the Matt Millen era have fooled some, the present offers no hope for years to come. The defense is uncommonly bad, even by the Lion’s recent standards. They cough up big points early and if they need a late stand to seal the win … well, I don’t have to tell you.

It’s easy to lay it on Joe Barry but I won’t bother. Where are the promising young players years of early draft picks would normally yield? Ernie Sims has his moments but little else generates hope for a better day. A couple players have stood out as disappointments. Cory Redding signed a blockbuster contract two years ago that has yielded next to nothing. Leigh Bodden, who picked off six passes in Cleveland last year, has one of two Lion’s interceptions after nine games.

Searching the offense for future hope is equally dismal. This is an offense that has received seven first round picks in seven years, including some pricey early picks (two second picks, a third and a sixth). Comically, four of these are, or were, wideouts.

Calvin Johnson is the only one still around and undoubtedly will be the best. The other first round pick of this bunch still playing in Detroit is rookie Gosder Cherilus, who should have a question mark instead of a number on the back of his jersey. Pardon me for belaboring the obsession with wide receiver … but …a recent survey of NFL General Managers (Sports Illustrated) rated wide receiver as the second lowest priority position in round one, just ahead of punter.

Kevin Smith will not reach the heights of probably at least 10 to 12 running backs picked in the last three years. 2008 makes the second consecutive season with virtually no running game. This is unlikely to change without wholesale changes in the offensive line.

Shall we pile on by examining the quarterback situation?....

Shock Win Third WNBA Championship in Six Years

Shock Win Third WNBA Championship in Six Years
By Steve St. Pierre
for In Play! Magazine

Despite playing through a season that included major and constant injuries, suspensions, trades and counting on rookies to carry their reserve unit, the Detroit Shock have won their third WNBA Championship in six seasons.

The Playoffs began with the Shock facing the Indiana Fever in a three-game series in which the Shock won in three games. Detroit then went on to play the New York Liberty in the Eastern Conference Finals, also winning that series in three games. Finally, they met the San Antonio Silver Stars in the WNBA Finals, a best-of-five series in which the Shock swept the first three games.

“(Our players) deserve all the credit in the world,” says Bill Laimbeer, Shock Head Coach and General Manager. “The performance we put on is quality of a (championship) team.”

“This is something that we play for all season,” adds sixth man Plenette Pierson. “This is something that you want in your career. We showed that when we play together and just did everything right, there was nobody that could stand between us.”

The Shock truly had everything going against them this season. Beginning with the starters, shooting guard Deanna Nolan played hurt the entire summer; point guard Elaine Powell missed 20 games with a foot injury; small forward Katie Smith played in the Summer Olympics in the middle of the season, having to make several adjustments both personally and professionally; and center Kara Braxton went from starting at the beginning of the season to being benched to rejoining the starters after power forward Cheryl Ford went down for a season-ending knee injury.

The UFC Are The Kings Of Mixed Martial Arts Right Now.

The UFC Are The Kings Of Mixed Martial Arts Right Now.
By John Pollock
for In Play! Magazine

Whether you are a fan of the sport or not, when you hear the initials UFC, the images of fights, cages and the foul mouthed president Dana White instantly enter one's mind.

Today, the private company is believed to be worth well in excess of $1 billion under the ownership of Zuffa L.L.C., with interests in the company divided amongst White and casino magnates Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta. The company's worth is more astounding when one realizes that Zuffa purchased the company for a mere $2 million in 2001.

The UFC saw great success in the early 90s on pay-per-view as a spectacle sport with its mixture of fighting disciplines marketed as “Two men enter, one man leaves." Needless to say, there was no shame in its presentation.

Pay-per-view numbers aside, the UFC (then under the ownership of the Semaphore Entertainment Group or SEG) was thrown off pay-per-view through the lobbying of Arizona Senator and now Republican presidential hopeful John McCain. The company fell to such lows that when Zuffa came along with their $2 million offer, SEG was more than happy to cash out.

It was not a straight road to prosperity. Zuffa nearly sold the company after losses of $44 million over their first four years of operation from 2001 to 2004.

The saving grace for the company came in the form of a TV deal with Spike TV, the ballsy American cable network looking to compliment their prime property, World Wrestling Entertainment. With the blessing of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, Spike debuted “The Ultimate Fighter” on January 18, 2005.

Hocktoberfest...A Spooktacular Success!!!

Hocktoberfest...A Spooktacular Success!!!
By Bob Bellacicco
for In Play! Magazine

Two years of hard work paid off for the organizers of Hocktoberfest, the largest female hockey tournament ever hosted in Essex-County.

“We’re still in shock. The feedback we’re getting is positive. People are writing in thanking us for providing them with competitive games, great officiating and a great tournament overall. We’re beaming with pride and thanking everyone” says Cathy Murphy, one of the tournament organizers.

Murphy praised the co-operative effort put forth by the City of Windsor, Town of Tecumseh and the Town of LaSalle in providing arenas to accommodate the tournament. She also cited the help of a large group of volunteers.

“We sent out posters last year. 170 people signed up.” Murphy continues, “A lot of the people that came out to help weren’t even involved in hockey.”

“It was a huge step for women’s hockey and the area” says Murphy. “I think we’re going to see more teams on board. More Europeans that’s for sure. I’m looking forward to next year.”

Murphy says that plans for next year’s event began the day this year’s festival started. She estimates that the local economy received a 3.5 million dollar boost from the tournament.

OHL’s Best Coming to Windsor

OHL’s Best Coming to Windsor
by Matt Dumouchelle
for In Play! Magazine

The Ontario Hockey League’s youngest stars are coming to the League’s youngest arena in February.

The Windsor Spitfires will play host to the 2009 OHL All Star Classic from February 2nd to 4th at the brand new WFCU Centre, but the game is only part of what will be an exciting weekend at the new rink.

The Spitfires will be hosting several events around the All Star Classic, including a skills competition between the representatives of the Eastern and Western Conference, a half-time concert and an OHL Alumni game featuring former NHL stars and Spitfires alumni on February 3rd.

The event will also feature a party zone at the WFCU Centre for two days, a special All Star Luncheon on February 4th at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts, followed by a Skate with the Spits later that evening.

It’s been a long time since Windsor hosted the OHL’s mid-season classic, 30 years in fact, and there’s no denying the WFCU Centre was a huge draw for the OHL Board of Governors to select the site for 2009.

Special night puts bow on exceptional '07-'08 season

Special night puts bow on exceptional '07-'08 season

for In Play! Magazine

"It was exciting for us, of all the celebrations we've had since we won it's kind of the climax of it all," Red Wings' Goalie Chris Osgood says. "For us it was just awesome seeing the banner go up and you know you should never take things like that for granted. It's very very hard to win in this league."

That was the sentiment throughout the Red Wings' locker room on opening night and even their 3-2 loss to the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs following their championship celebration couldn't dampen Detroit's sprits.

Opening night festivities included a new NHL promotion called NHL Rocks which included a Def Leppard concert at the Fox Theatre, raising the championship banner to rafters at the Joe and celebrating the franchise's 11th championship with a sell-out crowd of Red Wings' fans and alumni including Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsey, Alex Delvecchio and Dennis Hextall.

Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels narrated the ceremony, with music accompaniment from the Wayne State Symphony Orchestra, taking players and fans through highlights of last season's Stanley Cup run, along with video packages of Detroit's award winners from last season.

All seven trophies Red Wings' players received last year were on the ice, with the Stanley Cup taking center stage, creating an impressive display of hardware.

The real highlights of the night were the banner raising and presentation. The Red Wings' alumni on hand and a group of fans dubbed the "Citizens of Hockeytown" brought the banner out and presented it to the current Wings for them to raise into history.

"When the banner was coming out and going up I got goose bumps," left winger Tomas Holmstrom says.

#16 Dave (Jack) Hanson...Old Time Hockey At Its Best!

#16 Dave (Jack) Hanson...Old Time Hockey At Its Best!
By: Michael Niziolek
for In Play! Magazine

“Slap Shot” was just a job during the offseason for Dave Hanson who played #16 Jack Hanson of the Hanson Brothers in the cult classic Slapshot, before that he was a hockey player and well traveled one at that. After his role in the sports comedy he continued his ten-year playing career racking up 300 points and nearly 3,000 penalty minutes.

Hanson jokes that even though the movie stared three good looking, intelligent guys he and his friends Steve and Jeff Carlson had no idea the film would become arguably the greatest sports movie ever made.

Now, thirty years later, Hanson is telling tales about his career, the film and its sequels in his book “Slap Shot Original: The Man, The Foil, The Legend.” In-Play! Magazine got a chance to catch up with Dave before his tour to talk to him about the book, movie and hockey.

IP: Let’s start out with the book “Slap Shot Original: The Man, The Foil, The Legend” - why did you decide to write it?

DH: I got a call a few years ago from a writer out in Minneapolis who was writing a book about the code of hockey. It had to do with fighting in the game, how players approach it and what they think about it. After we got done speaking, through the interview process with him, he was like geez you got some stories you ought to put in writing.

I laughed it off, but as time went on I started thinking about it and I thought it might be a fun thing to do. I had no idea how to approach it, but I figured I would just start at the seed and continue through till now. That’s kind of how I wrote and Triumph Books outside of Chicago liked the idea and decided to publish it for me. I had no idea where it was going to go, but I just tried to go chronologically through when I was born, through my childhood, my hockey playing career, the movie was part of that, and to now.

By: Michael Niziolek
for In Play! Magazine

Not many building managers have developed into cult heroes, but with his Zamboni driving and Octopus twirling Al Sobotka, Building Operations Manager for Olympia Entertainment, has become a hugely popular figure for Red Wings' fans.

For 38 seasons Sobotka has been part of Olympia Entertainment and after graduating high school in 1971 worked his way over the years from the midnight cleaning shift to building manager overseeing…well everything.

"I'm in charge of the ice - putting that in, maintenance of it. All the people that are hired to clean the building, painting, things like that," Sobotka explains. "Hundreds of little things every day."

For Sobotka, and his crew, the day starts at around nine in the morning getting the ice ready for the morning skate by both the Red Wings and visiting team than repeating the process after practice. Sometimes they will even have a show or event in-between that they'll have to clean up after.

SPARTANS BASKING IN THE GLOW OF PROPER DECISIONS

SPARTANS BASKING IN THE GLOW OF PROPER DECISIONS
By Fred Heumann
for In Play! Magazine

(EAST LANSING) - Tom Izzo has been an icon at Michigan State for some time now, but even his remarkable presence in East Lansing was not enough to shed the image of a University in athletic disarray.

Enter the two Marks.

First it was Mark Dantonio, and then it was Mark Hollis.

Dantonio was happily molding a program at the University of Cincinnati when he was wooed and eventually hired by Hollis, then the MSU Athletic Director in waiting(with Izzo’s help & blessing).

“I remember contacting Mark (Dantonio) when we first had interest in him,” Hollis recently recalled. “He told us he wasn’t interested in even talking to us until his season was over.”

Perhaps it was then that the powers that be at MSU realized they had their man. While George Perles, Nick Saban, John L. Smith & company may have all been fine coaches in their own right, had a similar call been made to any of them during any stage of their coaching careers, they would have hired a human slingshot to get to town and check out the new opportunity.

Pistons Begin Curry Era With A Changing Of The Guard

Pistons Begin Curry Era With A Changing Of The Guard
by Steve St. Pierre

The Pistons are on a mission to prove to their fans that they still have what it takes to compete for an NBA Championship.

They came into this season with only one significant change in the hiring of Michael Curry, Pistons Head Coach. Fans voiced their displeasure after the team produced only minor changes to the roster. That was until Nov. 3, when the franchise announced its acquisition of superstar guard Allen Iverson.

Coming over from the Denver Nuggets, Iverson was traded in exchange for guard Chauncey Billups, forward Antonio McDyess and center Cheikh Samb. McDyess is expected to be released by Denver and could re-sign with Detroit following a 30-day wait.

“We are pleased to welcome Allen Iverson to the Pistons organization,” says Joe Dumars, Pistons President. “Allen has proven he is one of the elite players in the league and we like what he adds to our roster at the guard position.”

With Billups vacating the starting point guard spot, Iverson is expected to step right into the role and should have little trouble establishing himself as the new face of the franchise. The Pistons are also excited about the debut of Curry, who appears to have already won over his players with his philosophies and approach to the game.

“I have gotten nothing but positive feedback from each and every (player) about playing for our new coach,” Dumars says.

“Michael Curry is more of an in-your-face type of coach…” adds forward Amir Johnson. “…If you don’t play hard, you come down and sit on the bench.”

Prior to the Iverson deal, the team had made only minor changes. Since drafting rookie Walter Sharpe in June, the Pistons signed only reserve free agents, inking guard Will Bynum, center Kwame Brown and re-signing forward Walter Herrmann and guard Alex Acker. Detroit also announced contract extensions for veterans Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo, Jason Maxiell and Rip Hamilton.

9 Weeks, 9 Losses, Four Quarterbacks, Two Blackouts and Zero Wins…

9 Weeks, 9 Losses, Four Quarterbacks, Two Blackouts and Zero Wins…
By: Michael Niziolek

Despite some progress towards the end of October, the Lions took a huge step backward against the Jacksonville Jaguars in November losing their third game at home this season by more than 20 points.

The Lions got manhandled on both the offensive line (giving up seven sacks) and defensive line (giving up 150 yards) by the sub .500 Jaguars. The Lions used two quarterbacks, Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton, but neither was able to show anything approaching consistency.

In just his first week with the Lions, Culpepper was thrown into the fire after QB Dan Orlovsky was ruled out during the week because a hand injury he suffered against the Chicago Bears in Week 9. Culpepper rebounded after an early interception, but only managed five completions for 104 yards.

His one highlight came on a 51-yard strike to Calvin Johnson, but a 31 point deficit led to Stanton replacing him in the fourth quarter. Stanton's big moment came earlier in the game when he replaced Culpepper on a goal line situation and threw his first NFL touchdown. In the fourth quarter he led the Lions on one drive down the field, but struggled with avoiding pressure and was sacked five times.

Daunte Culpepper, Optimistic After Jags Game...Maybe Too.

Daunte Culpepper, Optimistic After Jags Game...Maybe Too.

Daunte Culpepper offered up his thoughts on his first game with the Detroit Lions and here is what he had to say, "It was definitely not the outcome I wanted. We didn't win. That's the main goal-is winning. I think we have some things we can build on, and I think as far as personally, I feel I made some mistakes, but I had some good things happen. It's a working process.

Culpepper continues “Like I said before, I knew-I understand and understood how tough it is to come and play the game of football when you're working in the same system for the whole off-season-so to come in quickly was tough but I was up to the challenge. As far as the team goes, I think there are some good things that we definitely can build on so with that I have to keep myself to be positive-positive attitude and keep moving forward."

If you were wondering why Culpepper was pulled when the Lions neared the goal line Culpepper explains, "No, no it was a plan-we had a plan. We have some different plays and different tricks against the certain defensive fronts. They wanted to put (Drew) Stanton in because he has been here the whole time. We knew inside the 5-yard line that he was going to come in, so that was the point-so that's why I came out the first time."

When prompted as to what he feels needs to change around the Lions locker room Culpepper says, "I think winning is an attitude, and I think when every single person has that attitude that no matter what-don't look at the scoreboard, scoreboard doesn't matter. When you're down or up, you play until the game is over. When you have that attitude, that's when you win a lot of games, and that is when you are successful. I think that's what I am going to continue to harp-don't look at the scoreboard, scoreboard doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. If we're up or down, it doesn't matter. We have to keep playing through, and keep wanting to be successful every play in and play out."

Lions Game Nine, Isn’t So Fine

Lions Game Nine, Isn’t So Fine

Well it’s another game in the books and still nothing has changed, well there’s a new quarterback but still, nothing has changed. The Detroit Lions are 0-9.

After the game Head Coach Rod Marinelli gave the media his post game report.

"Just a couple injury updates; Dewayne White had a calf early in the game and pulled it, so obviously he didn't play the rest of the game. Jared DeVries; hand; as of right now, it may require surgery. I'm not quite sure yet. Keith Smith; groin, and Mike Furrey had a mild concussion early in the game.

Marinelli goes on to give us his synopsis of the game as he saw it.

"I take my hat off to Jacksonville. They're a very, very physical team and they ran the ball very well on us with about three or four runs and did a nice job with their play action and we couldn't get enough snaps for our offense and that's where we're at."

When asked further about DeVries’ injury and if it was possibly fractured Marinelli says, "Right now they've got to go get it x-rayed. They feel it was."

Marinelli talked a little bit about the Jags defense and this is what he had to say, "They ran three or four plays; power with a ream inside against under and then we kicked our end from a six to a five and they pushed it and were able to get the backside guard up and through. They did a good job standing on our feet and pushing and then they run what we call a smart-belly, where it starts to the weak side and they bring the fullback on the way back and try to force on the backside end. And we got a forced; we've got to make sure our fallback players are falling back inside and we struggled doing that and their backs ran extremely hard and we had some chances to man-up on them and hit them and we fell off some tackles."

MIS Installs Soccer Fields

Michigan International Speedway President Roger Curtis compacts the ground in Lot 12, preparing for the speedway’s new soccer fields.

Community goal! Michigan International Speedway soccer fields take shape

BROOKLYN, Mich. (Oct. 30, 2008) – Michigan International Speedway is always evolving and will soon be a multi-sport facility.

All the grading for two soccer fields in the track’s Lot 12 is complete. The fields will be ready for use in the spring, once the grass comes in.

The soccer fields are sized 50 yards by 80 yards for youths 12 and under, and 45 yards by 60 yards for youths 10 and under.

“Michigan International Speedway has been a part of the community for more than 40 years and we’re always looking for unique and interesting ways to open up the speedway for everyone to enjoy,” track President Roger Curtis said. “Our employees live, work and play in the Irish Hills so this is another way for us to give something back to our community and its youth.”

The soccer fields also help preserve green space, another important part of Michigan International Speedway’s mission.

There are two community soccer fields a few miles from the speedway. But the fields criss-cross each other, so only one field can be used at a time.

Tigers Decline Renteria’s Option For 2009

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the organization has re-hired Jeff Jones as the club’s bullpen coach, completing Jim Leyland’s staff for the 2009 season. Additionally, the Tigers today announced Bruce Tanner has been promoted to major league scout, while the club today also officially declined to exercise the 2009 option of shortstop Edgar Renteria and outrighted the contracts of righthanded pitcher Gary Glover and catcher Dane Sardinha to Triple A Toledo.

Jones served as the club’s bullpen coach the past two seasons, marking his fifth stint in that capacity with the Tigers. In addition to the last two years, he spent the 1995 season, the final month of the 1998 season and all of 1999 as the club’s bullpen coach, in addition to joining the major league staff to serve the remainder of the season in that role on both September 7, 2000 and April 9, 2002.

“We are pleased to have Jeff Jones on the coaching staff for the upcoming season,” Leyland said. “Jeff has done a tremendous job for the Tigers organization over the years. After talking with both Jeff and Rick Knapp this week in Detroit, we felt Jeff was the best fit to be the club’s bullpen coach.”

Prior to joining Detroit’s major league coaching staff for the 2007 season, Jones most recently served as the pitching coach at Triple A Toledo for seven seasons (2000-06). He also served in that role with Toledo in 1990, 1993-94 and 1997-98. Jones began his professional coaching career with the Tigers organization in 1989, when he served as the pitching coach at Single A Fayetteville. Additionally, he spent two seasons as the pitching coach at Double A London (1991-92) and one season as the pitching coach at Double A Jacksonville (1996).

0-7...TIRED OF REPORTING

NOT EVEN GOIN TO WASTE OUR TIME!

DETROIT LIONS VS. WASHINGTON REDSKINS:

POSTGAME QUOTESLIONS HEAD COACH ROD MARINELLI Opening Statement:

"Just an update on the injuries. (Jerome) Felton had an ankle; (I) don't know how bad that is. (Damion) Cook, knee; Casey (FitzSimmons) had a shoulder and then we made a move yesterday with Gilbert Gardner. (He) got hurt in practice and we brought up Anthony Cannon. On what went wrong during the game against Washington: "Well, we had a couple false starts, you know. And you can't do that and we had two holds and you can't do that. (You) can't hold; it's simple football. When you do that it-we're not good enough right now-1st-and-15, those things hurt us. We had some plays that we got; they got brought back so, that hurt us."On how to change the mental mistakes of the players: "I just keep doing what I do. I mean, you just go-we've cut back some things. You just keep going over it and that's what you have to do there. They're playing hard. (I'm) coaching the dog out of them, each and every day we're out there and they respond all week; great attitudes. We're just not getting it done on Sunday."On how to turn it around: "We made some progress in some areas this week. You know, we went in (and) slammed the run early. We had a good pass-rush, you know. We left some stuff out there. Our blitzes were-we had some nice blitzes, they were open. Now, we've just got to execute, (and) get the guy on the ground. We had two of them, we had two guys free. So some of those things were there, then you've got to cut the penalties back. The time of possession's still hurting us. Defense is on the field too long. Offense has got to get more. So you just-there's some things that you see that we're improving at but not good enough, and it's not good enough yet to get a win."On if it's now time to win and not talk about progress: "You know, I see on the field certain things we've done in terms of our run-defense have been good. So we've been playing that a little bit better, and the pass-rush is getting better. I think our blitzes are coming; we've just got to execute the blitz at the end. But those are the things I can see, and they're working, but the wins aren't there and I understand that."On why Marinelli still believes wins are coming: "Because that's who I am. You are you. You're negative."Ok, so I'm going to answer you: because I believe in what we're doing and I'm just going to keep doing it."

LIONS QB DAN ORLOVSKY On why the team can't get over the hump of making small mistakes:

"That's tough, you know. Lack of execution and failure is going to happen, we're people. But we're making too many of them, and it's tough to swallow. It's tough to go, you know, three weeks in a row against potential playoff teams and fight to the end and lose our possession. That's tough. "I love the guys on this team. I love the people, the coaches. You know, the guys who fight, it's awesome. But it's not enough. It's hard to swallow as a competitor." On what happened during the last drive of the game: "We were in a two minute situation. We knew we had no time-outs, so they were in a max drop eight, so you want to be aggressive but you want to give yourself a chance also. So we were able to get a first-down or two and then just didn't make enough plays at the end. "(I'll) go back and check the film to see if I missed a throw or missed a read. They did more than us to win today, and especially on that drive."On the frustration of losing 14 of the last 15 games: "Yeah, I mean its 14-of-15, that's easy to see. Fourteen-of-15 is bad. You win 14-of-15, you're great; you lose 14-of-15, it's not good. But it is what it is."On does the game not being a sellout effect the game performance: "We weren't too consumed with it. We wanted to go out and play ball."

LIONS WR CALVIN JOHNSON On if this is frustrating:

"Yeah, it's frustrating. It starts with myself and everybody else has to know there are certain times we had to execute when we didn't. We had penalties and stuff. We've got to try to eliminate those things."On him being in the backfield next to the quarterback to get a mismatch with the linebacker: "Yeah, that second time we ran it, it allowed me to get outside the linebacker to catch the ball and make my way into the endzone."On if he's noticed a difference in the way defenses treat him with Williams gone: "The first game we played Houston last week, they still played their main coverages. This team, they didn't change too much, but the safety's always deep. But a lot of times - in the beginning of the game - he played over the top of me trying to high-low me."On where this team is: "It's real frustrating because we got ourselves in a good situation today and just failed to execute in the second half. I had a penalty there and we just had some mishaps in the second half and weren't able to get the ball down the field."

LIONS DE CLIFF AVRILOn having chances and not being able to capitalize on them:
"We've just got to be detailed. Sometimes we can just be off. I mean in the NFL you have to be on point with everything and we just had little minor things that we need to work on to get better."On whether his own personal plays become overshadowed once they got the loss: "I'm just trying to help as much as possible. I could have made more plays to help the team out. It's a team thing for me; I'm not really necessarily worried about my stats or anything like that."On whether or not the Redskins did anything to surprise them: "Portis and Campbell, they're great players. You can't take anything away from them. You just have to make plays."On whether or not it's simply back to the drawing board with Chicago coming up next: "Definitely back to the drawing board; we're going to come back and work hard on Wednesday and go back at it"

DETROIT LIONS TRADE WR ROY WILLIAMS TO DALLAS COWBOYS

Allen Park, Mich. -Detroit Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew announced today that the team has acquired the Dallas Cowboys' first-, third- and sixth-round 2009 draft choices in exchange for WR Roy Williams and the Lions' 2009 seventh-round draft choice. Williams (6-3, 212) emerged as one of the NFL's elite receivers in his first four-plus seasons with Detroit.

In 60 games (56 starts) for the Lions, he had 262 receptions, 3,884 receiving yards (14.5 avg) and 29 touchdowns. Williams finishes his Lions' career seventh in all-time receiving yards, 10th in receptions and seventh in receiving touchdowns. After establishing career-highs in 2006 with 82 receptions and an NFC-high 1,310 receiving yards, Williams played for the NFC squad in the 2007 Pro Bowl, marking his first career Pro Bowl selection.

He was the first wide receiver to represent Detroit in the annual all-star game since Herman Moore played in the 1999 Pro Bowl. Williams' size, speed and strength have been an asset to the Lions since they drafted him with their first round selection (7th overall) in the 2004 draft out of the University of Texas. His 245 receptions and 3,652 receiving yards (2004-07) were the most by a Lions' receiver in history during the player's first four NFL seasons.

DETROIT LIONS PLACE QB JON KITNA ON RESERVE/INJURED LIST

Allen Park, Mich. -Detroit Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew announced today that the team has placed QB Jon Kitna on the Reserve/Injured list.
"After extensive examination and consultation with the team medical staff, it became clear that placing Jon on injured/reserve was the right decision. Jon and I met today and discussed moving forward with respect to his rehabilitation which will be done in coordination with our medical staff."

Kitna (6-2, 220) had started in 36 consecutive games for Detroit before leaving the Week 5 contest against Chicago (10/5) with a back injury. Consequently, he missed his first game as the Lions starting quarterback the following week at Minnesota (10/12).

"Jon injured his back in the first half two weeks ago against Chicago," said Team Physician Dr. Kyle Anderson. "This represents an acute exacerbation of a chronic condition. Rather than risking further injury, it's the collective opinion of the medical staff that the best decision is to place Jon on the injured/reserve list allowing him to complete a rehabilitation program."
Kitna signed with Detroit prior to the 2006 season and has established himself as one of the best passers in team history. He has the Lions' highest career completion percentage (62.3) and highest single-season completion percentage (63.3) set in 2007. Kitna completed 70.0-percent or more of his passes in seven games since joining Detroit and threw for more than 200 yards in 30 of his 36 starts. His career quarterback rating with the Lions (79.6) is also the best in team history.

In 2007, Kitna became the first Lions' passer to throw for over 4,000 yards in consecutive seasons (4,208 in 2006 and 4,068 in 2007) and the only passer to throw for 4,000 yards twice. He joined an elite group of passers last season becoming one of nine passers in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in back-to-back season. With 9,034 passing yards in two-plus seasons, Kitna is eighth on the franchise's all-time passing list.

Conference Call With Wings GM Ken Holland and Mike Babcock Oct 7, 2008

Conference Call With Wings GM Ken Holland and Mike Babcock

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland and Head Coach Mike Babcock
Oct 7, 2008
Conference Call Transcript

DAVID KEON: Good afternoon, everyone. I'm David Keon of the National Hockey League's public relations department, and I'd like to welcome you to today's call. With us we have Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland along with head coach Mike Babcock.

Thanks to both Ken and Mike for joining us today, and thanks to John Hahn of the Red Wings' public relations department for helping to set up this call.On Thursday, the Red Wings will raise the 2008 Stanley Cup banner at the Joe Louis Arena when they kick off the 2008-09 regular season in North America by taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs, a game that will be carried on Versus in the United States and on CBC and RIS in Canada at 7 p.m.

Detroit has won seven consecutive division titles, has had eight consecutive 100-point seasons and has the longest active postseason streak in major professional sports that has seen them compete for the Stanley Cup the past 17 seasons.

They're also the last team to win back-to-back Stanley Cups, accomplishing that feat in 1997 and '98.Thanks again to both Ken and Mike for joining us to answer your questions.

Q. I was just wondering, could you update us on your roster moves, how you're getting down to the 23, beyond putting Aaron (Downey) on waivers, please?

KEN HOLLAND:
Well, today we assigned Ville Leino to Grand Rapids; we assigned Jonathan Ericsson to Grand Rapids; we assigned Darren Helm to Grand Rapids. We've informed Aaron Downey that he's been put on waivers, and we will readdress his situation tomorrow. And it appears that Jimmy Howard, Darren McCarty and Chris Chelios will all start the year on injured reserve.

Q. I just wanted to ask you as a coach, you had experience going to game seven with Anaheim a few years ago. Can you draw on that in terms of the short off-season and what you learned from that in terms of how you might coach and approach the early season with Detroit this year and try to avoid that Cup hangover?

MIKE BABCOCK:
Right. Our situation there was totally different. Paul Kariya and Adam Oates left and we brought in Sergei Fedorov and Vinny Prospal. We changed the group at the top totally here. We've maintained the same group and probably added more talent -- well, not probably. We've added more talent. We talk about the short summer all the time. I've made it very clear to everyone that we had 106 days off this summer and 113 last year, so it wasn't that short. But there's no question that it's hard to win the Stanley Cup; it was hard to win it last year, it's going to be hard to win it this year. Whether or not a Cup hangover has anything to do with that, I'm not sure. But we have done everything we can to reestablish our work ethic and our structure here at training camp, and we're excited about one more day to prepare and then get at her.

Lions...0-16 Not Far Off!

Lions...0-16 Not Far Off!
Lions Insider
In Play! Magazine

After watching today’s game against the Chicago Bears the possibility of this Lions team going four months without winning a single game seems more realistic by the snap!

Today’s performance left me...well depressed.

How can a team be so bad for so long?Answer this question and you should be that TV show the Apprentice.

So what now Lions fans? Is Marinelli’s head next on the chopping block? Is he the next to go? Should he be the next to go?

In the post game press conference Marinelli was asked if he expected to be fired soon and he responded, "I think I've repeated this a lot to you, that I don't look in the future, right? I think I've said that to you, right? Would you agree? Your silence is agreement. If you're silent then you agree with me. Good; so I've already said it." Marinelli went on to say "I'm going to again tell you exactly what I've said in the past: I'm going to get up in the morning and go to work."

Here we go again with the arrogant attitude, just where we left off at the 0-3 mark. You would think a coach with a 0-4 record (so far) would have a little humility.

Marinelli steadfastly maintains he will keep on, keepin on and that everything is business as usual. A reporter asked if he thinks he can turn the season around to which Marinelli replied "Well, I think we have to go back and just keep evaluating talent, get the right people in here and keep working on what we do in terms of our system and improve it."

Correct me if I’m wrong but evaluations should have been completed back in training camp...correct?

Pistons Make History With 50th Season In Detroit

Pistons Make History With 50th Season In Detroit
In Play! Magazine
By Steve St. Pierre

Last season was indeed a historic one for the Pistons as they celebrated 50 years in the Motor City.

Among the many highlights of their celebration included the honoring of the Detroit Pistons’ All-Time Team in a special pre-game ceremony held April 8. The event took place at The Palace of Auburn Hills prior to Detroit’s game against the New York Knicks, who at the time were coached by former Pistons legend Isiah Thomas, one of 30 players to be named to the All-Time Team.

At halftime of the Pistons’ game March 29 versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, the organization honored Jack McCloskey in a retirement ceremony. McCloskey, nicknamed “Trader Jack” during his tenure as the team’s General Manager 1979-1992, was responsible for assembling the Bad Boys, the Pistons’ teams who won consecutive NBA World Championships in 1989 and 1990. A banner with McCloskey’s name was raised to the rafters following speeches from Joe Dumars, Pistons President, and Chuck Daly, who coached the team during both title runs.

Perhaps the best memory of the 2007-08 Pistons campaign is the Pistons Cares Telethon Benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation – Michigan Chapter, which was held March 14. The telethon ran throughout the day, from 6 a.m. into the evening when the Pistons hosted the San Antonio Spurs, as fans submitted their donations. It was the first time in Detroit sports history that a team devoted an entire day, including their game and their broadcast, to a telethon raising money for charity.

Ilitch Charities held its inaugural Celebrity Golf Classic this August to raise funds for two great non profit organizations. It also gave metro-Detroit residents a chance at meeting some of the biggest Hollywood personalities and sports stars.

Oakland Hills Country Club hosted the golf outing, with the Motor City Casino Hotel hosting a pre-party the night before that included a silent auction and strolling dinner.

Both events sold out and both events were considered major successes.

“We were just completely pleased, we had a great time and we were able to fully raise the funds we needed,” says Ilitch Holding’s Director of Communication Jennifer Haselhuhn. “We’ve heard nothing but enthusiasm from the people that participated.”

Some of the celebrities that participated were Tim Allen, Mike Binder, Dave Coulier, John Cusack, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Laird Hamilton, Thorsten Kaye, and John McGinley.

The Tigers and Red Wings were well represented with a variety of their current and former players taking part in the event. Al Kaline, Mickey Stanley, Cecil Fielder, Chris Chelios, Gordie Howe, Joey Kocur and Darren McCarty were just a few of the names from the organizations there.

Other local celebrities participating included Bill Laimbeer, Bernie Smilovitz and Don Shane.

For the golf tournament the celebrities were paired with three donors and played best-ball for a cumulative round score. Awards were handed out to the top three teams, on both the south and north courses, along with a few individual awards for best drive and closest to the pin.

At the pre-party event the celebrities and sports stars expressed a lot of enthusiasm for playing at one of the premier golf courses in the country.

“I played at Oakland Hills years ago and the course won,” Dave Coulier jokes. “I shot a 77 that day and I thought I shot really well, but the course definitely won. I know how tough the course is -- it’s long, it’s unbelievable.”

Old School Coaches by Drew Lane

Old School Coaches
In Play! Magazine
By Drew Lane

I love old school coaches. Maybe I’m showing my age as we all eventually pine for the way things used to be. Sometimes I worry that we’re spoiling our kids, but when you compare that to what is going on with today’s athletes it makes our kids look straight out of the Depression era.

Terrell Owens is an outstanding wideout, period, but surely I’m not the only one who experienced unfettered and unexplainable joy when the Eagles and Andy Reid (not the perfect “old school” model I’m talking about) said nobody will put themselves ahead of my team, so take your tired act somewhere else.

Naturally, Dallas grabbed him, “made it rain” with T.O. Dollars, and the self centered superstar has lived to enjoy another stage and spotlight.

Even on television pregame and post game shows, I love old schools shit-kickers like Mike Ditka calling out talented stars who take plays off or put themselves ahead of the team.

Right here in southeast Michigan we’ve had more than our share of “old school” coaches. Scotty Bowman struck fear in his players and the media as well. Lloyd Carr always stuck up for his “kids” but wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger when a Braylon Edwards type was phoning it in or not giving 100% in practice. While the Piston didn’t always do it with a smile, old school Larry Brown did get them to do it the “right way”, which brought consecutive finals appearances.
