Red Wings Look to End Struggles with Islanders

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

The Detroit Red Wings will look to end the team’s struggles against the New York Islanders today. Possibly no other team in the NHL has dominated the Wings in recent years than the Islanders. The Islanders have shut out the Wings in both of their last meetings.

The Islanders are on a three game win streak, their last effort ending the prolific 25 game scoring streak of Pittsburgh’s Sydney Crosby. The Islanders have been the NHL’s most consistently bad team and have failed to make the playoffs since 2007. Currently, the Islanders are 29th in the standings leaving only New Jersey six points behind.

Blackhawks Drop Wings on Chelios Night

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

Chicago Blackhawk fans were rewarded for booing Chris Chelios tonight as their team carried on to a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Chicago.

Patrick Sharp opened scoring at 1:04 of the first, added to by Bryan Bickell before the five minute mark of the period. Patrick Eaves cut the lead to just one 30 seconds later. Tomas Kopecky netted the last two goals of the game.

Wing’s coach Mike Babcock said after the game that he was “shocked” at how slow the Wings started and that he was particularly disappointed in the second line which will not be the same on Sunday. The Wings played as sour as the taste Hawks fans should have in their mouths after they booed Chris Chelios, the best Chicago born player in history. The most pressing issue facing the Wings is that the teams plus/minus leader is Justin Abdelkater, who moved to a +11 tonight and is the ONLY player on the Wings in the double digits.

In Play! Man of the Game: Chris Chelios. Chelios handled himself like the veteran of 84-I mean 26-NHL seasons he is when his hometown booed him on the night the team honored him.

Blackhawk fans boo Chris Chelios on his own Heritage Night

Before the start of the Red Wings/Blackhawks game on December 17, the Blackhawks honored newly retired defenseman and Chicago Native Chris Chelios on his hall of fame likely career. Only catch, he got booed by the crowd.

In a pre-ceremony video, only a clip of Chelios taking liberties with Red Wings Steve Yzerman and exchanging blows with Bob Probert got cheers in a video highlighting Chelios’ decade with the Blackhawks.

During his speech, every pause Chelios made was filled with slurs of, “Trader, Detroiter,” and, “Go back to Detroit where you belong.” Chelios finished his remarks with, “Hey. Can’t we just let bygones be bygones?” It was the only thing he said that drew cheers.

Blackhawks To Honor Chris Chelios During Pre-Game Tonight

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

For the second time this season, the Blackhawks will have a pre-game ceremony before playing the Red Wings. Tonight, they honor the career of Chris Chelios.

In honor of the night, the Red Wings gave Chelios a signed Blackhawks jersey with his picture taped to it with remarks from the team. Jiri Hudler, pictured above, noted, “It was an honor to play with someone older than my dad.”

On the other side of the puck drop, Mike Babcock has switched his starting goalie for tonight to Jimmy Howard in favor of giving Chris Osgood his first crack at 400 wins at home Sunday versus Dallas. The wings will look at repeating the performance they gave Wednesday at home, a game that saw Nicklas Lidstrom net his first career hat-trick, making him the oldest player to record his first hat-trick and the oldest defenseman in Red Wings history to net three in a game (taking that distinction from former defensive line mate Matheiu Schneider).
Red Wings are 1-0-0 against the Blackhawks this season. The teams, which have met more than any other teams in NHL history, have yet to play in Detroit this season.

THE MONTREAL CANADIENS MOURN THE LOSS OF PAT BURNS

In Play on Facebook

Montreal (November 19, 2010) - The Canadiens organization was deeply saddened to learn that former head coach Pat Burns lost his long and courageous battle against cancer. Burns, 58, died surrounded by his family at La Maison Aube-Lumière in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Born on April 4, 1952 in Montreal’s St-Henri borough, Pat Burns played his way through the minor hockey ranks earning a brief stint with the London Knights of the OHL, before embarking on a career with the Gatineau police force. His passion for the game kept him in hockey as a minor hockey coach in the Outaouais area, and in 1983-84 he was called upon to coach the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL where he served for four seasons, including a trip to the Memorial Cup in 1986 after posting a remarkable 54-18-0 regular season record.

Burns made his debut with the Montreal Canadiens’ organization in 1987 as head coach of the franchise’s main affiliate Sherbrooke Canadiens. He was promoted to the position of Montreal’s head coach after a single season in the AHL. In his first season behind the Habs’ bench, Burns led his troops to the Stanley Cup finals after a regular season record of 53-18-9 and his first Jack Adams award as Coach of the Year.

In 1992-93, following four seasons with the Canadiens, Burns took on the coaching duties with the Toronto Maple Leafs, leading the team to the Conference championship and earning his second Jack Adams award after leading the Leafs to a franchise-record 32-point improvement. Following a one-year hiatus in 1996-97, Burns is hired as head coach of the Boston Bruins and at the end of his first season he becomes the first head coach in NHL history to win three Jack Adams Awards. After four seasons in Boston, Burns accepts an offer to coach the New Jersey Devils in 2002-03 posting a .622 winning percentage and leading them to the Stanley Cup over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in a thrilling 7-game series.

Through his 15-season career as head coach in the NHL, only once did Pat Burns miss the playoffs (1999-2000 with the Bruins) while at the helm of his team. His overall numbers speak volumes of his character and dedication. Burns won 501 of the 1,019 games he coached, losing only 353 and tying 165 games. His record in the playoffs stands at 78 wins and 71 losses in 149 games.

Pat Burns is survived by his beloved wife Line, his daughter, Maureen and son Jason.

Chris Osgood tallied win number 398 in his career as the Detroit Red Wings delivered Nashville’s second regulation loss with a 5-2 victory at Joe Louis.

Pavel Datsyuk was first on the board tonight on a wide open shot in front of the net. Brad Stuart followed with his first of the season. Joel Ward brought the game within one before Datsyuk netted another goal then Tomas Holmstrom and Patrick Eaves followed. Kevin Klein scored the final goal for Nashville.

Detroit was off to a better start than Thursday’s game in which they gave up 3 goals in 12 minutes. Datsyuk looked great tonight while Patrick Eaves chipped in offensively and Ruslan Salei got his first and second points of the season, both on Datsyuk’s goals. Justin Abdelkater, who replaced the healthy scratched Jiri Hudler, also looked great in his first start of the season.

Rest and Injuries for the Red Wings

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

The Detroit Red Wings are ending a recent part of their schedule which saw them only playing four games in 14 days, but still the Wings are dealing with injury troubles.

Chris Osgood will make his second straight start due to an injury to Jimmy Howard.

Brian Rafalski, who was injured in the very early stages of this season, is now on short term IR to make cap room to bring up a replacement for Jimmy Howard. Howard will miss his second game tonight with a back injury. Jonathon Ericsson is still down with his back injury as well.

Kris Draper is also on IR after hernia surgery, meaning there are currently no members of the fabled grind line currently dressing for the Wings. With Justin Abdelkater returning to the lineup tonight from his injuries, one member of the team will be forced to step aside to make room.

"Tough Guy - My Life on the Edge" by Bob Probert

Bob Probert's new book
"Tough Guy, My life on the Edge"
With a Forward by Steve Yzerman.

An ongoing review of the newly released autobiography by Bob Probert. The book was almost complete at the time of Bob's unfortunate and untimely death.

We just got an advanced copy of Bob Probert's book that he was working on entitled "Tough Guy." I will be reading and posting tidbits from each chapter. Just started reading but the prologue gives you a detailed first hand account of what happened July 5th, 2010, the day Bob passed away. VERY, VERY SAD!

Review
by Jack Rosenberg

In Play! Magazine

One of the best hockey books I have ever read. Bob's brutal honesty is what makes this book believable. He held nothing back when talking about infidelity, the drugs, the boozing, his legal issues and the love for his wife and family. Bob's premonitions of an early death bring an eerie element to his story.

Advisory: Quotes and passages are not censored.

Prologue - The Last Chapter
This is saddest part of the book. It's a first hand account of Bob's last day. It puts to rest all the rumors and sets the record straight as to what really happened July 5th, 2010. I remember that day clearly as the rumors hit the internet like a buzz saw. I thought for sure that it was some prank or sick joke, but it wasn't.

"Penny (Dani's aunt) thought it seemed like an eternity getting the kids home and picking up the car before she and Dan (Bob's in-law) were finally headed to the hospital. When they were about five minutes away, Dan's cell phone rang. It was Leslie (Dani's mother). "He's gone," she said.

Chapter 1 - Probably the most famous of all NHL fights was between Bob Probert and Tie Domi. Arguably the two toughest NHLer's to ever lace em up and ironically they are both from the Windsor area. "Tie Domi was a little fucker, and I figured "Why not?" You know? I didn't have to fight him but I said "Aw fuck, let's go. Give him a chance for the hell of it." - Bob Probert on Tie Domi breaking into the league.

Chapter 2 - The old Olympia was located in a bad part of Detroit towards the end of it existence. "When my dad took Norm and me to games, he'd bring his little snub nosed .38. He'd drive across the border with it in his belt. He'd whip open his coat, show his badge and say "I'm going to the game." When we walked to the car after the game he'd have it in his hand, dangling at his side. - Bob Probert on his Dad.

Chapter 3 - Bob gets his first taste of booze at fourteen...and likes it. " I wondered what that tastes like? So I opened one (beer) and knocked it down. Nothing happened. I had another, and another. After drinking about five of them I started getting a buzz, then it really kicked in. I was like Wow, this is pretty neat. But I knew I had better get to my bedroom before someone saw me staggering and falling down." Bob Probert

Chapter 4 - Bob tells the story of Todd Francis taking a shit on the hood of Shane Corson's brand new Z28!"

"So many guys were doing it - banging land-ladies. It's still happening today...I told my wife, Dani, this story and she said "Can we billet a couple of Spitfires next year." Bob Probert.

Chapter 5 - Bob talks about one of his first big bouts with Ken Baumgartner while playing with the OHL Soo Greyhounds. "You motherfucker, as soon as we get out (penalty box), were gonna go right here! Right here buddy, right here." - Bob Probert

Chapter 6 - Bob tries blow for the first time and is hooked. "He handed me a rolled-up bill and I did some lines. It was an instant love. Oh yeah. I had been kind of slurring a little bit from drinking, but all of a sudden, I wasn't as messed up. And it gave me this energy. I felt like Superman. It was just like WOW! This is awsome."

Chapter 7 - For those of us who lived in Windsor and were into the bar scene at the time we heard all the stories of Bob getting into trouble, bar fights, cops, you name it. "In October 1986, I was sentenced to two years probation for assualting a police office the night I refused to leave Tune-Ups tavern." "That whole year was fun, but I got into a lot of trouble. I was red-flagged at customs, red-flagged with the Windsor Police, and red-flagged with the Wings." - Bob Probert

Chapter 8 - "I had a philosophy when a guy took a dive on me. Next time, you won't need to be diving, because it's really going to hurt." - Bob Probert

Chapter 9 - "Probe, I've had it with you. You don't wash your underwear. You're eating a hamburger, you're not taking this serious, and I've just had it." - Red Wings Assistant Coach Colin Campbell.

Chapter 10 - While holed up in the Relax Plaza in Windsor because he was suspended by the Wings and the US Government pulled his visa Bob meets his soul mate Dani Wood. "It wasn't so bad because it was full of beautiful girls, especially the blonde at the front desk named Dani. I kept looking at her. She was incredibly hot-drop dead gorgeous, actually. I called up my buddy , Dino Rossi, and said I've fallen in love and found the girl I'm going to marry, and it turned out to be true."

Chapter 11 - Bob goes into complete details of the night he got busted at the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel with 14.2 grams of Blow. "On September 26, 1989, at 2 PM I was sentenced to six months in jail by U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Duggan." - Bob Probert

Chapter 12 - Bob tells the story of how gave Sheldon Kennedy his nick name. "I called Sheldon Mo Melly. One time we, were singing the name game, and I had a Mo Melly moment - "Shelly, Shelly, Mo Melly, banana-fana, bo-belly, fee-fie-fo-Felly. Shelly" I mean we would laugh all the time I would wake him up by jumping on his bed at like five in the morning. "Wake up Mo Melly! Wake up, Mo Melly! Let's go (water) skiing!"

Chapter 13 - Bob's legal battles continue from his tunnel bust and they're starting to weigh on him. "I was feeling pretty stressed about the whole deportation issue. Our first game in Canada was October 13, and I was refused permission to cross the border (back into his own country) to play. Then the Immigration and Naturalization Service sent me a letter ordering me to turn myself in - they wanted to put me back in jail until my appeal went to court." - Bob Probert

Chapter 14 - Anybody who ever saw Bob fight knows he was all business and no theatrics. Although Bob liked Tie Domi he didn't care for the show boating and the whole "Heavyweight Belt" nonsense from their bout on February 9, 1992. "I didn't care for that, or the way Domi acted after. I didn't like the way he was building himself up And when people start going to the press and mouthing off, well, that's not cool" - Bob Probert

Chapter 15 - After three and half years of not being able to play a Canadian team due to his immigration issues Bob was finally cleared to cross the border. "On Monday December 7, (1992) James Montgomery, the Director of the INS's Detroit district office, cleared me to travel back and forth across the border, which meant I would be able to play in Toronto two nights later...and I liked playing the Leafs."

Chapter 16 - One of the all-time top fights in hockey was the February 4, 1994 merry-go-round between Bob Probert vs. Marty McSorley. The fight lasted over a minute and a half and Bob tells it from his perspective. "I was just bagged after that one. It was the most tired I had ever been after a fight. When I came off, Mo Melly (Sheldon Kennedy) patted me on the back and said, "You are a fucking machine to pull that out of your ass."

Chapter 17 -Bob tells his side of his departure from the Wings. He says it boiled down to a clerical error that made him a restricted free agent, which opened the flood gates for other teams to make him an offer with the Wings having the option to match it. The entire situation is disclosed including how much money was offered, the contracts and ultimately Bob's move to Chi-town.

Chapter 18 - "Bettman is an asshole. A frikkin asshole. I think he's ruined the game of hockey. He's supposed to be impartial. He's supposed to speak for the good of the league, but in my opinion, he's strictly behind the owners. Those 1996 rule changes are a joke" - Bob Probert

Chapter 19 - Bob parts ways with long time lawyer/agent Pat Ducharme and decides to handle all aspects of his NHL contracts. Bob explains monetary and bonus conditions such as body fat %, bike endurance, weight and oxygen consumption. He really shows the business side of hockey in this chapter.

Chapter 20 - "That was it, the game was over, and I was the last guy to score at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was a big thrill for me. One of the top ten best things in my career." - Bob Probert

Chapter 20 - This passage really foreshadows the future to come. "I hope that at my funeral, people who helped me don't go yapping about my problems. Shut up, you know? That's why I am writing my own book, to tell it my way before someone else screws it up."- Bob Probert

Chapter 21- Bob talks about how he beat piss tests by microwaving "clean" urine for 12.5 seconds in order to get it to the correct temperature. "I'd take it out, test the temperature and pour it into a little tube with a stopper. Then I'd stick it inside my pants beside my dick and go and answer the door."  - Bob Probert

Chapter 22 - The thoughts of death keep haunting Bob and his premonitions continue to foreshadow. "What was I going to do for the rest of my life? I had reached most of my goals. What was left? And in the back of my mind I couldn't shake the thought that the doctor's weren't telling me everything. I had this feeling something was seriously wrong. I never thought I would live very long anyway. I was thirty-seven. I figured I might have three year left" - Bob Probert.

Chapter 23 - After Bob has retired his wife Dani confronts him about why he still parties so much and asks him if it is something she has done or if Bob is not happy with her. "That shocked the shit out of me. Dani and I were soul mates. Dani had been though the worst with me. She stuck it out and stood by me. She was my lifeline to normalcy." After this Bob wants to enter into rehab...again.
We will continue to pdate this as we make our way through the book.

Chapter 23 - Again, the best thing about this book is Bob's complete honesty. Onother one of Bob's highly publicized run in's with the law was the taser incident down in Florida on June 4 , 2004. Bob explains how much fun it was getting tasered three times. "It did get into the news that I tried to flood the toilet at the jail, but that's not what happened. When they tasered me the third time I shit my pants. So when they booked me and put me in a cell, I tried to wash out my shorts and the bowl flooded." Bob was eventually found not guilty on the original charges.

Chapter 24 - In July and August of 2005 Bob was arrested two more times. Once was an incident at his home and the other was in downtown Windsor after partying at the Windsor Bluesfest. Ironically this was the fist time I met Bob when we were both backstage at Bluesfest that very night. He explains what happened later on that night and the consequences. "That twenty dollars worth of coke cost me twenty grand. Paying Pat Ducharme to defend me again, cost me $14,000, and I got fined and put back into a rehabilitation diversion program for the rest. - Bob Probert

Chapter 25 -In 2006 Bob is starting to get his life back on track. His kids are getting older and he cannot hide his lifestyle from them anymore. After a breaking a vital commitment he made, Bob's daughter wrote a letter to him that changed his mindset "I couldn't get that letter out of my mind. I always wanted to be a hero to my kids." - Bob Probert

Chapter 26 - Bob made two trips to Afghanistan to support the troops. While on his second trip he begins to realize how important his family is to him and how he has been living his life. "We phoned a bunch of families, and then I called Dani and the kids. Hearing their voices kind of choked me up. She and the kids were safe. I had to go all the way to fucking Afghanistan before I finally understood, that is what it's all about." - Bob Probert

"Tough Guy" leaves us on July 1, 2010 with Bob describing a boat outing to Peche Island with his family, laughing, joking around and watching his kids play in the water. "It was a perfect day." Four days later, Bob would be gone.

I hope you are in a better place...

KIRK MALTBY RETIRES AFTER 16 NHL SEASONS

In Play on Facebook

...Four-Time Stanley Cup Champion To Return To Red Wings As Pro Scout…

Detroit, MI... Detroit Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, announced today that he will retire from the National Hockey League after 16 NHL seasons. He appeared in 1,072 games during his career, one of only 251 players in NHL history to reach the 1,000-game milestone.

Maltby, 37, was originally a third round draft pick (65th overall) of the Edmonton Oilers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He spent parts of three seasons in Edmonton before a trade deadline deal in 1996 brought him to Detroit in exchange for defenseman Dan McGillis. Maltby would spend the rest of his career in the Motor City, playing 908 games in a Red Wings sweater, tied for seventh-most in franchise history with former teammate Sergei Fedorov. He finished with 128 career goals (107 with Detroit), 132 assists (115), 260 points (222) and 867 penalty minutes (683). Maltby also appeared in 169 postseason games for the Red Wings, fourth-most in team history behind only Nicklas Lidstrom (247), Kris Draper (212) and Steve Yzerman (196). He won four Stanley Cups donning the winged wheel (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008) and became a fan favorite thanks to his agitating style. He was a member of the infamous ‘Grind Line’ in Detroit. He became the 239th player in NHL history to play in 1,000 career games on February 27, 2009 against the Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena. He played his final game in the National Hockey League on February 13, 2010, scoring Detroit’s first goal in a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Maltby will stay with the Red Wings organization as a pro scout. His responsibilities will include scouting teams at both the NHL and AHL levels, providing insight on player personnel decisions including trades and free agent acquisitions, as well as assisting in preparation for upcoming opponents. Kirk and his wife, Wendy, along with their three children, will continue to reside in the Detroit area.

RED WINGS SIGN MIKE BABCOCK TO FOUR-YEAR EXTENSION

In Play on Facebook

…New Deal To Keep Head Coach Behind Detroit’s Bench Through 2014-15 Season…

Detroit, MI...Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has reached a four-year contract extension with Head Coach Mike Babcock. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Babcock, 47, is currently in his sixth season with the Red Wings. He first stepped behind the bench in Detroit at the start of the 2005-06 season and has since compiled a 259-101-52 regular-season record with the Red Wings. He is the first coach in NHL history to guide his team to four consecutive 50-win seasons in his first four seasons with a team, leading the Red Wings to 58 victories in 2005-06, 50 in 2006-07, 54 in 2007-08 and 51 in 2008-09. Under his watch, the Red Wings have twice captured the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s regular-season champion (2006, 2008). He was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award in 2008 and was named the NHL’s coach of the decade by both the Sporting News and SportsIllustrated.com (2000-09). Last season, he guided the Red Wings to their 10th consecutive 100-point season, an NHL record, and their fifth consecutive 100-point season under his watch. His overall record through seven seasons as an NHL head coach is 326-163-85.

Photo by Jack Rosenberg / In Play! Magazine

Babcock’s NHL postseason success is equally impressive. He holds a 48-33 playoff record through five postseasons with Detroit. After a first round loss in 2006, the Red Wings advanced to the Conference Finals in 2007, back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009, and the Conference Semifinals in 2010. Through his first seven seasons as an NHL head coach, Babcock’s teams have advanced to the Stanley Cup Final three times and the Conference Finals four times. He led Detroit to the 11th Stanley Cup championship in franchise history in 2008. His overall postseason record through seven NHL seasons is 63-39. Since his first year as an NHL head coach with Anaheim in 2002-03, he has coached in more postseason games (102) and has more postseason wins (63) than any other NHL head coach. He also holds the second-highest winning percentage (.618) during that span.

Babcock has also represented his native Canada at several international competitions. He helped Team Canada secure gold at the 1997 World Junior Championships, the 2004 World Championships and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver last February. He became first coach to win all three components of the Triple Gold Club (Stanley Cup, Olympics and World Championships).

Red Wings Steal Blackhawks’ Banner Night

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

The Detroit Red Wings stayed perfect on the season by taking Chicago’s home opener and Stanley Cup Banner night in a 3-2 win in regulation.

Valtteri Filppula was first to crack the score sheet tonight with a goal a little more than halfway through the first. Brent Seabrook tied the game at the end of the first. Todd Bertuzzi scored quickly in the second before Bryan Bickell tied it again. Filppula netted the only goal of the third.

Tonight was a test skill wise for the Red Wings, who faced their number one rival the Blackhawks, a team that despite looking a little different is poised to make a run to repeat. They were bringing a hard effort tonight since they raised their banner and it’s the first non exhibition game in front of their own fans since winning the cup on the road.

In Play! Man of the Game: Valtteri Filppula. Filppula netter the first and game winning goals, plus was on the ice when Bertuzzi scored. Filppula has two goals and an assist in two games this season.

Red Wings Take Opener, Look to Spoil Hawk Banner Night

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

Saturday the Detroit Red Wings will attempt to follow up a 4-0 win over Anaheim in their season opener in Detroit by spoiling the home opener of the Blackhawks.

Chicago started their Stanley Cup defending season on the road and on the wrong foot. They lost 4-3 in overtime to the Colorado Avalanche, but are hoping for a win in their home opener against the Wings. The game is also special because the Hawks’ will be raising a Stanley Cup banner during pre-game.

Detroit seemed like little was going wrong for them in their home opener Friday night. Although already down two skaters and loosing Jonathan Ericsson during the game, the injuries that seemed to plague the team last year don’t look to be going away. But Mike Modano netted his first as a Wing, Johan Franzen opened scoring for the season, Dan Cleary used his surgery corrected knees to stuff a puck into the net and Datsyuk finished the game with a Gordy Howe Hat Trick.

RED WINGS ADJUST WEEKDAY START TIMES

In Play on Facebook

… Move Maintains Consistent 7:30 PM Start For Weekday Games …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced that weekday start times will be moved to 7:30 pm, creating a consistent start for Wings’ games throughout the 2010-11 season and continuing the traditional start time for weekday Wings’ games at Joe Louis Arena.

“One of the key reasons we considered 7:00 pm starts was to keep all our weekday start times consistent throughout the season with the traditional 7:00 pm starts of nationally televised games,” said Steve Violetta, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs. “However, this season’s national broadcast schedule changed to 7:30 pm start times, resulting in eight home games moving to 7:30 pm and creating even more inconsistency in our start times than in the past. Maintaining a 7:30 pm start time on weekday games will result in a consistent start time throughout the season and less confusion for our fans.”

The traditional 7:30 pm start times begin this Friday when the Red Wings open the 2010-11 regular season by hosting the Anaheim Ducks at Joe Louis Arena (FSD and 97.1 The Ticket). Only two exceptions to the weekday start time remain: Dec. 10 vs. Montreal at 7:00 pm due to CBC coverage and the Red Wings’ traditional 7:00 pm start on New Year’s Eve, this year vs. the NY Islanders.

Detroit, MI... Chris Chelios, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and three-time Norris Trophy winning defenseman, announced today that he will retire from the National Hockey League after 26 seasons. Chelios played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers during his illustrious NHL career. He retires having played the most games by a defenseman in NHL history (1,651) and as the only player in league history to play in over 400 games for three different teams (Chicago-664, Detroit-578, Montreal-402).

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of this game at the highest level for a long time,” said Chelios. “I’ve met a lot of great people and developed some special relationships along the way. The three championship teams I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of have truly been the highlights of my career. I’m excited for this next challenge to begin and I’m also thankful the Wings have extended this opportunity for me to continue to be close to the game.”

Chelios, 48, was originally a second round draft pick (40th overall) of Montreal in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Following his selection by the Canadiens, he played two seasons for the University of Wisconsin, helping the Badgers lay claim to the 1983 NCAA National Championship with a 6-2 win over Harvard in the championship game. Chelios was named to the all-tournament team. The Chicago, IL, native devoted the following season to playing for U.S.A. Hockey in preparation for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. It was the first of four Olympics in which Chelios would don the red, white and blue during his international hockey career (1984, 1998-team captain, 2002-team captain/silver medalist, 2006-team captain). He would also represent the U.S.A. in three Canada Cups (1984, 1987, 1991), two World Cup of Hockey events (1996, 2004-team captain) and once at the World Junior Championship (1982).

Chelios’ NHL career began shortly after his first Olympics appearance on March 8, 1984, when the Canadiens played host to the Hartford Whalers. He would play in 12 regular season games and 15 postseason contests for Montreal that year. The following season, Chelios blossomed into an elite NHL defenseman, securing a spot in the 1985 NHL All-Star Game, finishing second in Calder Trophy voting as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year (Mario Lemieux) and being named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team. He would spend seven seasons in Montreal, playing in 402 regular season games and 98 playoff contests. Chelios helped the Canadiens win their 22nd Stanley Cup championship in 1986. He claimed his first Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman in 1989 and was named a first team NHL All-Star. He would again be selected to represent Montreal at the 1990 NHL All-Star Game. On June 29, 1990, Chelios was traded along with a second round draft pick to his hometown Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for NHL Hall of Famer, Denis Savard.

Chelios’ elite play would continue in the Windy City. During his nine seasons with Blackhawks, he played in 664 regular season games and 65 postseason games. He represented Chicago in seven NHL All-Star Games (1991-94, 1996-98). Chelios helped lead the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup Final in 1992 before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in four games. It was Chicago’s first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since 1973. During the postseason run, he recorded 21 points (6-15-21) and added 37 PIM in 18 playoff games.

Chelios won two Norris Trophies (1993, 1996) in a Blackhawks sweater and was runner-up to Paul Coffey of the Red Wings in 1995. He was named a first team NHL All-Star three times (1993, 1995, 1996) and a second team All-Star twice (1991, 1997) in Chicago. On March 23, 1999, Chelios was again traded, this time to arch-rival and two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit in a trade deadline deal for defenseman Anders Eriksson and two first round draft picks (1999 and 2001).

Chelios played in 10 regular season games and averaged over 27 minutes of ice time in 10 postseason games following his move to the Motor City in 1999. In 2000, he was selected to represent his third different team at the NHL All-Star Game. Despite what seemed to be a short-term addition to the Red Wings’ blue line, Chelios eventually spent over nine seasons wearing the winged wheel. In 2002, at the age of 40, Chelios appeared in his 11th and final NHL All-Star game, finished with the highest plus-minus rating in the NHL (+40), finished second in Norris Trophy voting to teammate, Nicklas Lidstrom, and was a first team NHL All-Star for the fifth time in his career. Chelios played an integral role in helping the Wings capture the 2002 Stanley Cup, the second of his career. He would add a third championship to his resume with Detroit in 2008 at the age of 46. In total, Chelios would appear in 578 regular season games and 103 postseason games for the Wings.

On March 2, 2010, Chelios signed with the fourth team of his NHL career, the Atlanta Thrashers. He appeared in seven games for Atlanta, playing his final NHL game on April 6, 2010, when the Thrashers faced-off against the New Jersey Devils. In a credit to his competitiveness, determination and longevity, Chelios retires as the oldest U.S. born hockey player of all-time and the second oldest player in NHL history behind the legendary Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe (52).

Chelios’ accomplishments place him among the game’s all-time greats. He played the fourth-most regular season games in NHL history (1,651), the most postseason games in NHL history (266), he ranks second all-time among defensemen with 2,891 penalty minutes, eighth all-time among defensemen with 763 assists and 10th all-time among defensemen with 948 points (185-763-948). His postseason numbers include 144 points (tied seventh all-time among defensemen) and 423 PIM (first all-time among defensemen).

Off the ice, Chelios has been active in charitable efforts throughout his career. In 1992, he established the Cheli’s Children’s Foudation, which has donated over $2 million to various children’s charities throughout Chicago and Detroit, including the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Children’s Memorial Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association.

Chelios will return to the Red Wings as Advisor to Hockey Operations. He will work closely with Detroit’s front office and coaching staffs, providing insight on a wide range of on-ice issues while helping to develop and mentor young players within the organization. He will also assist on the business operations side of the team, appearing at games and other functions to interact with fans and potential business partners.

Chelios will continue to reside in the Detroit area with his wife, Tracee, and their two daughters, Caley and Tara. His two sons, Dean and Jake, are currently enrolled at Michigan State University and will play hockey for the Spartans this fall.

The Detroit Red Wings officially announced today that Mike Modano has signed a one-year contract worth just over a million dollars. Modano, who has played his entire career with Dallas Stars franchise, is the all time leading scorer among American born players and is a native of the Detroit area.

Red Wings and Little Caesars junior hockey owner, Mike Ilich, said he was excited to have Modano on the Wings. “He’s one of only three players to make it from Little Caesars to the NHL and it’s great to have him playing at home.”

Modano, who admitted to the media about being talked away from retirement by his wife, said he doesn’t feel any pressure for the season. “I’m a little nervous to go back to Dallas and I think the fans will be too. I’m sure I’ll get the same sendoff as I did as a Star though. I don’t know what the fans in Detroit will do the first time I take the ice. I’m a little nervous about that also,” Modano told In Play! about his only reservations coming into this season. “I’ll have a good season as long as I stay healthy. If my body doesn’t let me down, I know Dan [Cleary] and [Jiri] Hudler won’t let me down on the ice. I’ll put numbers together once the season gets going.”

Modano also said, jokingly, that he asked Ken Holland to call Gordy Howe and ask if Modano could wear the number 9 for a season. Instead, Holland gave Modano the number 90.

FLAMES AND CANADIENS TAKE IT OUTSIDE FOR NHL HERITAGE CLASSIC

McMahon Stadium To Host First Outdoor NHL Game In Canada Since 2003.

NEW YORK (August 4, 2010) – Representatives from the National Hockey League, the Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens met today at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium in advance of the 2011 NHL Heritage Classic™, the regular-season outdoor game to be played Sunday, February 20, 2011. The League, the Flames and the Canadiens today also unveiled the game-day jerseys specially designed for each team for the event.

The 2011 NHL Heritage Classic marks the first regular-season NHL game contested outdoors in Canada since the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Canadiens at Commonwealth Stadium on November 22, 2003. CBC and RDS will carry the game in Canada and VERSUS will telecast the outdoor match in the United States. NHL Radio™ will have the live action across North American radio. NHL Network™ will provide pre- and post-game programming, and NHL.com will provide extensive digital coverage.

"The Flames and Canadiens, two teams with so much history, will resume a rivalry that is so much a part of the National Hockey League’s proud heritage. Our first regular-season outdoor game was played in Canada, and we're excited to be coming back for the 2011 NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium Feb. 20," said Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the National Hockey League.
The Flames and Canadiens are the only clubs to have contested an all-Canadian Stanley Cup Final in the 40-plus years of the NHL's expansion era (since 1968), doing so twice in a four-season span. The Canadiens captured their 23rd Stanley Cup by defeating the Flames in five games in 1985-86 and the Flames won their first and only Stanley Cup in a six-game triumph over the Canadiens in 1988-89.

Both clubs boast a strong cross-country following and own long home sellout streaks. The Canadiens have drawn capacity crowds at Bell Centre for each of their past 248 regular-season and playoff games since January 2004, while the Flames have posted 230 consecutive sellouts at Pengrowth Saddledome since April 2004. These two teams will have one match-up prior to the 2011

NHL Heritage Classic when the Canadiens host the Flames on January 17th. “The Calgary Flames are honoured to be hosting the Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium. Calgary and Montreal have a storied past having faced each other in two Stanley Cup finals and we are pleased to be able to restore that rivalry on this grand stage with an outdoor game,” said Ken King,

President and CEO Calgary Flames. “The Flames organization, the city of Calgary and Flames fans everywhere are very excited about this very special event highlighted by the opportunity to see NHL action in a classic winter setting.”

“The entire Montreal Canadiens organization is thrilled to be part of this exciting event. We look forward to this celebration of hockey on Canadian soil and welcome the opportunity to revive our longtime rivalry with the Calgary Flames,” said Pierre Boivin, President of the Montreal Canadiens. “We had the privilege of playing in the first Heritage Classic, back in 2003, and we are pleased and honoured to have been invited for this outdoor showdown at McMahon Stadium.”

No Word on Mike Modano or Other Free Agents?

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

Moving into a third week of silence from the camp of Mike Modano, the Detroit Red Wings are now looking at finding their replacement for Brad May. Nearly three weeks ago Modano was reported as saying he liked the concept of playing in Detroit, but also likes the storyline of going to Minnesota. Mike Babcock, the Wings coach, seems to think Modano is leaning toward Detroit.

Aaron Downey has a cup ring with Detroit but might find himself having a locker in Joe Louis Arena next season also. Downey, who took a sabbatical last season after being denied contracts by Detroit and Phoenix, rehabbed his body and hockey skills during the 09-10 season. Now Downey has been granted a tryout with the Wings whose current enforcers, if you can call them that, are Justin Abdelkater and Patrick Eaves.

The Wing’s long list of free agents this off season has remained relaxed as well. Drew Miller, Patrick Eaves, Sergei Kolosov and Derek Meech have remained in the Winged Wheel while Jeremy Williams and Brett Lebda have sought contracts elsewhere. Jason Williams, Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby headline the Wings free agents that are still available.

Red Wings dominate NHL.com Plays of the Year

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

NHL.com has released its plays of the year in a combination of highlight reels that are heavy with Red Wing clips. In fact, more clips involve the Wings than any other team. Pavel Datsyuk was awarded the Shootout goal of the year for his lob shot over Antti Niemi, but Datsyuk also was given his own personal highlight reel on the website. The Wings also were featured, in a bad way, on the top goaltending reel helping four goalies amass five of the 10 clips.

The Wings’ January shootout loss to Chicago (which featured Datsyuk and Bertuzzi’s unforgettable shootout dekes) was one of the games of the year and Niklas Kronwall was honored for his unforgettable one-skate penalty kill shift. However, there is one video that the honored Red Wing could live without. Patrick Eaves was “honored” with the blooper of the year for his infamous shootout deke that left him, and not the goalie, face first on the ice.

Red Wings’ Brett Lebda becomes a Maple Leaf

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

Speedy defenseman Brett Lebda has chosen not to return to the Red Wings. Instead the free agent has signed a two year deal with Toronto. Lebda is seeking more ice time in Toronto and hopes to be a second line d-man.

Lebda has played 326 regular season games and 62 playoff games, all with Detroit. His 62 playoff games make him the second most experienced post season player on the Leafs to Tomas Kaberle who is currently on the auction block in Toronto. Toronto’s web site claims they expect Lebda to contribute to the Leafs as a poor man’s Ian White, but also consider him at the bottom of their depth chart.

Red Wings Sign Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves

By AJ Petronzi
In Play on Facebook

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves to one year contracts. Eaves first signed with Detroit last summer while Miller was acquired on waivers early last season. While neither player was much of a force on offense last season, both players found a place on the penalty kill.

Now that Detroit has signed both Eaves and Miller it looks unlikely that Kirk Maltby will be a Red Wing come October. Maltby’s place on the team is identical to Eaves and Millers and the cash-strapped Wings can’t afford to overload on one type of player.

Red Wing Great Bob Probert Dies at Age 45

In Play on Facebook
by Jack Rosenberg

It is with extreme sadness that we report former Detroit Red Wing Bob Probert has passed away. Details are not known right now but Probert allegedly collapsed on a boat on Lake St. Clair and was rushed to Windsor Regional Hospital without vital signs.

A response from the hospital Public Relations was not immediately answered.

Bob Probert - Windsor Minor Hockey Association Graduate

I was always a big Probert fan. My Red Wings #24 jersey is so old it doesn't fit anymore. I was always a huge fan and when I launched In Play! Magazine it was Bob and Joe Kocur on the very first cover in April 2007.

The first time I really met Bob was at his house one cold February night. We were in the basement about to shoot some pool but first I had to help him put a Christmas tree back in the box.
Bob hamming it up for the crowd in Leamington.

The last time I saw Bob, February 13, 2010.
Hanson Brothers and Old Timers vs Leamington Police Charity fundraiser.

I laughed to myself as I sat there and watched Bob try to forcefully jam this tree back into the box like he had jammed so many guys on the ice...but the tree wasn't going anywhere, it wasn't scared of him.

After a couple minutes of watching Bob man handle this tree I said, "Dude, turn the thing around and it will go right in." So big Bob turns the tree 180 and it slipped right in the box. Hockey players ehh? lol.

Here I was telling one of the toughest guys around and my hockey hero how to put a Christmas tree away, and he listened.
Bob is right there on the Red Line. How many NHLer's you can spot in this photo?

If you want to learn more about Bob I highly recommend you pick up the book, "The Bruise Brothers, Hockey's Heavyweight Champions." Us hockey fans were lucky enough the book got published and chronicled a small portion of his life before he was taken from us.

The following is link to a YouTube video of Bob and Joey in action.
The very last photo in the book is the IPM cover shot pictured here. I took it at Windsor Arena on March 25, 2007 after an Old Timers vs Essex game. One of many, many charity games Bob skated in to help raise money.

The Bob Probert critics didn't see.

Today is a very sad day for me. Bob was too young. I'm sure he still had lots of charity work he wanted to get done.

Take Care Bob, we're going to miss you...

Red Wings Owners Mike and Marian Ilitch on Bob...
“Bob was a part of our very first NHL Draft class that also included Steve Yzerman, Joe Kocur, Petr Klima and Stu Grimson. Bob was always there for his teammates and was one of the toughest men to ever play in the NHL. He also was one of the kindest, most colorful, and beloved players Detroit has ever known. We are very saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob’s family.”
I took this photo on Steve Yzerman's retirement night January 2, 2007. Bob asked for a copy.

Former Red Wing and Teammate Joe Kocur...
“This is a very sad day for Red Wings fans as we have lost one of the toughest players, best power forwards and all-around great guys who ever wore the Winged Wheel. My favorite memory of Bob would be sitting down before a game, going over the opposing lineup and picking and choosing who would go first and if the goalie would be safe or not. It was great to be able to go out on the ice knowing that he had my back and I had his. He was like the brother I never had. My prayers go out to his family.”

Marty McSorley on Bob...

There may be something in that none of Detroit&#8217;s free agents, and there are handful of them, have signed with other teams. <br /> <br /> Floating down the rumor mill is that Wings GM Ken Holland may be pursuing the services or Mike Modano. Modano, who is a Michigan native and career long Dallas Star, will not be returning to Dallas and does not wish to end his career just yet. Modano has said he wishes to go to a team he is familiar with, like the ones in the same division as Dallas. The question is whether or not he&#8217;s ready to return to his home state.<br /> <br /> <strong><a href="http://www.bluetoad.com/publication?m=347&amp;l=1">Read In Play!
