Red Wings Take Win, Hold Sixth Place

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After giving up a massive four goal lead, the Detroit Red Wings held on to win tonight over the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 5-4.

Detroit’s Andreas Lilja was first on the board tonight with his first of the season, followed by Kronwall, Miller, and Franzen. In the second, Edmonton found the net with goals from Tom Gilbert and Mike Comrie. In the third Edmonton tied the game with goals by Zack Stortini and Gilbert before Brad Stuart scored late.

Tonight was all about Detroit’s defensemen, although their commitment to the offence caused Jimmy Howard to get hung out to dry more than once. Only one of tonight’s goals was completely to the fault of Howard. Detroit needed this win to hold onto sixth place, if having lost tonight Los Angeles could have taken the spot in an important game for the Wings that pits LA against fifth place Nashville.

In Play! Man of the Game: Brad Stuart. Stuart’s been on a dry spell as of late, but tonight his deflection goal was the game winner. Stuart hadn’t scored since the Wings played Montreal in November.

Red Wings Win Scoreless Game Against Nashville in 11 Round Shootout

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Tonight was all about Pekka Rinne and Jimmy Howard in what was a duel that continued deep into a shootout.

The first goal scored tonight was by Todd Bertuzzi and that came five rounds into the shootout. Steve Sullivan tied up the shootout and no one hit the net again until Niklas Kronwall netted the game winner in the 11th round.

This game didn’t lack great offensive scoring chances and actually was full of them. The play from Howard and Rinne tonight was huge with both goalies doubling their personal highlight reels. Detroit outplayed Nashville despite the fact that the Wings played last night but couldn’t solve Rinne.

In Play Man of the Game: Jimmy Howard. Howard beat out Rinne for the honors tonight due to the outcome of the shootout. Tonight was Howard’s second career shutout on 33 shots faced (That doesn't count the 11 rounds of the shootout).

Red Wings Go Wild on Minnesota!

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings scored the first goal tonight against the Minnesota Wild and never gave the Wild a chance to get back into the game.

Johan Franzen broke open the sheet tonight and was then followed by Tomas Holmstrom, Jonathan Ericsson, and Pavel Datsyuk before Andrew Brunette stopped the goal run by scoring for the Wild on the powerplay. Detroit had killed off the previous 29 penalties before allowing the goal. A weird bounce put the Wild within two early in the third, but then Franzen and Drew Miller drove the game home.

Detroit had a slow start but took control of the game halfway through the first. Detroit’s special teams have been rolling which was big tonight with the game’s 30 penalty minutes. Minnesota amassed 20 of those minutes. The top line for the Wings (Franzen, Datsyuk, Holmstrom) had four of the six goals with the number two line (Todd Bertuzzi, Henrik Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula) seeing their point steak of 20 points in three games come to an end as no one on that line recorded a point tonight.

In Play! Man of the Game: Johan Franzen. Franzen was on fire tonight, recording a career high four points (2-2).

Detroit Red Wings Beat St. Louis 4-2

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Despite giving up a quick goal to St. Louis, the Detroit Red Wings came back and took control of the game, beating the St. Louis Blues 4-2.

Paul Kariya scored first tonight with a breakaway. Then in the second, Henrik Zetterberg scored just 26 seconds into the period, followed four minutes later by Todd Bertuzzi. Jay McClement tied the game early in the third, but Valtteri Filppula came back with a pair of goals to give the Wings the win.

Detroit easily could have been down by five goals after the first period because the Blues kept feeding breakaway after breakaway. Jimmy Howard has huge tonight in net, making 30 saves to record win number 30 of the season. Howard is still making his case for the Calder Trophy. Last year Steve Mason, another goalie, won the trophy and recorded 33 wins and 10 shutouts. While Howard only has one shutout, he is one of the players in the running. Detroit hasn’t seen a Calder Trophy since the 1950’s.

In Play! Men of the Game: Zetterberg, Filppula, and Bertuzzi. This line has combined for 20 points in the last three games including several multi-goal nights from Zetterberg and Filppula.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF TICKETS ON SALE SATURDAY

Photo by Jack Rosenberg / In Play! Magazine

Detroit…The Detroit Red Wings will begin selling single-game tickets for the first two rounds of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Joe Louis Arena this Saturday, March 27 at Noon. There’s nothing like the excitement of the playoff hockey at The Joe and once again, pricing for individual playoff tickets remain locked in at the same prices Wings fans enjoyed during both the 2008 Stanley Cup Championship run and the 2009 drive to Game 7 of the Finals.

The Wings are 8-2-1 since the Olympic break as they battle to extend their current streak of 18 consecutive playoff appearances, the longest in major professional sports. If the playoffs were to begin today, the Wings would open vs. the Chicago Blackhawks.

Red Wings Take Another Huge Win Over Pittsburgh

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings scored first in this game and never looked back, beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1.

Valtteri Filppula was the first one to score a goal tonight with a minute left in the first period. Henrik Zetterberg then netted a goal to give Detroit the two goal lead. Pascal Dupuis closed Detroit’s lead back to one until Zetterberg scored early in the third to put Detroit up by two.

BONUS Post game audio from Sidney Crosby

"Wings fans don't forget to join our fan page >>>"

The Red Wings played a better game than Pittsburgh. It was obvious in the way the two teams played that the Penguins are battling for a top three seed in the playoffs and didn’t come out with the same desperation that Detroit, who is simply battling for the playoffs, came with. Zetterberg continued to play at a level that befits a player of his caliber, and Jimmy Howard, with 26 saves and a tangle with Sydney Crosby after the game, showed he wishes to remain the starter in net for Detroit. Crosby called Howard out to the media after the game, "I don't know what he was doing...if he thought he could get a free shot in. He didn't belong there."

BONUS Post game audio from Lidstrom, Howard and Babcock

In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg hasn’t played great this season, but the last five or six games have been different. Zetterberg scored twice tonight and had an assist on Filppula’s goal.

Story updates and audio coming shortly.

Calgary’s Langkow OK After Hit in Spine by Puck

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Despite a motionless 10 minutes spent on the ice last night in Minnesota, Calgary forward Daymond Langkow has full feeling and movement of his extremities after being struck in the spine by a slap shot from teammate Ian White.

Langkow was pushed by Minnesota defensemen Greg Zanon, who was playing with a broken ankle, and fell into another Minnesota player before falling forward. While falling forward, White took a shot causing Langkow to duck his head. The puck traveled directly over the helmet of Langkow and struck him in the spine between the bottom of his helmet and the top of his shoulder pads. Langkow then crashed head first into the ice, bending his neck in an awkward position.

Langkow called to Zanon immediately that he was injured and needed a trainer. Zanon and another Minnesota player in turn got the referee’s to stop play. Calgary gathered around their teammate on the ice until he was removed by a stretcher. The injury delayed the game 15 minutes and ultimately Calgary lost the game, remaining two points behind Detroit.

Langkow remained in Minnesota last night while the rest of the team flew home. He is expected to return to Calgary today or tomorrow, but his prognosis is good. The full extent of his injury, and how long he’ll be out of the lineup, is not yet known.

Henrik Zetterberg Gives Red Wings Win With Last Second Goal

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings overcame a two goal lead by Vancouver to win a huge game 4-3 with only three tenths of a second left in overtime. Detroit is now in eighth place in the Western Conference and is two points ahead of ninth placed Calgary.

Kyle Wellwood and Shane O’Brian put Vancouver up to a two goal lead before the end of the first period. In the second, Todd Bertuzzi and Pavel Datsyuk tied the game with goals only five seconds apart, a franchise record for Detroit. Valtteri Filppula scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway to put Detroit in the lead. Daniel Sedin tied the game in the third before Henrik Zetterberg ended the game just three tenths of a second short of a shootout.
Detroit scored a late goal last night and the same happened tonight showing that the team is driving for a spot in the playoffs. The Wings played strong through the opening period even through they gave up two goals and continued to beat away at Vancouver until they took the game in overtime. The Wings also were perfect on the penalty kill but also didn’t score on the powerplay.

In Play! Man of the Game: Valtteri Filppula. Filppula had a goal and two assists, including the setup for Zetterberg’s game winner. On top of all of that, today was Filppula’s 26th birthday.

Red Wings Face Must Win in Vancouver

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After giving up a win in Edmonton last night, the Detroit Red Wings face a must win game tonight in Vancouver if they wish to keep their playoff dreams alive.

Although Detroit did get one point last night when they forced overtime with a goal just two tenths of a second before the end of the game, they ultimately lost the game in overtime giving up the extra point. Going into tonight’s game, they are tied with Calgary with 81 points but Calgary has the tiebreaker meaning the Wings wouldn’t be in the playoffs if the season had ended last night.

After tonight’s game in Vancouver, the Wings face Pittsburg on Tuesday in Detroit. Both of these games are going to be difficult and if Detroit cannot win one, or both, of them it’s likely they will not be in the playoffs.

Red Wings Get Big Win in Calgary

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

After being down a goal early, the Detroit Red Wings came back and took a huge 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames to pull ahead of Calgary by three points in the race for the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

Calgary was first on the board tonight with a goal from Craig Conroy. Pavel Datsyuk got the Wings on the board late in the second period on the powerplay. With just 1:19 left in the game, Tomas Holmstrom deflected the puck in for the game winner.

Calgary had all the momentum in this game until Jimmy Howard denied Curtis Glencross late in the second period on a penalty shot. Forty seconds later Datsyuk scored and Detroit ran away with this one. Datsyuk’s powerplay goal gives Detroit 10 straight games with a goal on the powerplay, an NHL best for the season. The penalty kill was also working for Detroit, their best outing being in the third when they held Calgary to only two shots on a four minute powerplay.

In Play! Man of the Game: Tomas Holmstrom. Holmstrom was the key to opening Miikka Kiprusoff tonight. He was parked in front of the net on Datsyuk’s goal and deflected the game winner in off a wide shot by Johan Franzen.

Alexander, "Dirty O,” Ovechkin Strikes Again – Gets Third Game Misconduct

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

Any time a Chicago Blackhawk goes down it’s beneficial to the Detroit Red Wings, but when the injury is a result of one of the NHL’s biggest stars, you know Dirty “O” was probably involved.

And that’s what happened yesterday when Chicago’s Brian Campbell was sent head first into the boards from behind by Ovechkin. Ovechkin, who’s arguing his case to the NHL today, clearly hit Campbell, who was about six feet away from the boards, from behind. Dirty “O” was given a five minute major for boarding and a Game Misconduct.

This is the third time this season Ovechkin has been tossed from a game and he’s already served a two game suspension for a knee to knee collision. Ovechkin, who claims he did nothing wrong because he didn’t drive Campbell into the boards, is facing the league to see if he’ll receive another suspension.

Campbell, who wasn’t driven into the boards but was shoved awkwardly by Ovechkin into them, reportedly suffered a broken collarbone and some broken ribs. He will likely not return until after the first round of the playoffs.

Red Wings stop Sabers in OT

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings gave up a two goal lead, but still managed a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabers in overtime.

Pavel Datsyuk scored only two minutes into the game tonight and Patrick Eaves followed suit less than two minutes later. Before the halfway point of the first period, Buffalo’s Jochen Hecht scored to make it a one goal game. In the second, Hecht tied the game. Nothing changed until 31 seconds into overtime when Brian Rafalski scored the game winner on the powerplay.

Detroit’s powerplay has goals in nine consecutive games, which ties them for the season best with Washington, and Detroit’s penalty kill hasn’t allowed a goal in five games, allowing only five goals in the last 46 times the Wings have been shorthanded. Detroit seems to be getting everything back in line after a season long struggle with injuries. Tonight’s win leaves Detroit in eighth in the conference behind Calgary, who has a tough game against Vancouver tomorrow before meeting the Wings on Monday.

In Play! Man of the Game: Brian Rafalski. Rafalski lead all players in minutes played, with just short of 26, and netted the game winning goal. He also had 6 attempted shots, four of which were on net.

Detroit Red Wings Blow Out Wild 5-1

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings spent their entire first shift tonight in the Minnesota Wild’s zone, something that never really changed in this crushing 5-1 victory in Detroit.

It didn’t take long for Johan Franzen to crack tonight’s score sheet open, scoring a goal less than two and a half minutes into the game. Later in the first period, Tomas Holmstrom and Henrik Zetterberg scored goals, both less than a minute apart. Minnesota then scored with only seconds left. In the second, Drew Miller netted his first career short-handed goal, followed in the third by Franzen’s second goal of the night.

Detroit had a lot of questions to answer after Tuesday, no one facing more than Zetterberg who played possibly the worst game of his career. The Wings came back and answered those questions tonight. Other than the top line, the bottom three lines got shuffled and that seemed to have solved quite a few problems.

In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg played an excellent game, seeing time tonight on all four lines and scoring a goal and two assists.

Red Wings Lose To Calgary, Fall To Ninth in Conference

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings gave up two huge points against the team trailing them in the standings, ultimately giving Calgary and easy four goals and the last spot in playoff contention with tonight’s 4-2 loss.

Daymond Langkow opened the score sheet tonight, netting the first goal of the game in the second period. Rebounding from that, Detroit had goals from Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom to give the Wings the lead. Coming back in the third, Calgary tallied with Jarome Iginla, Rene Bourque, and Christopher Higgins.

The Wings played this game like they’re eyeing the number one slot in the draft, not like a team vying for the playoffs. This was possible the worst game the Wings have played all season. With rumors that Henrik Zetterberg is injured right now, it makes no sense why he’s being dressed. He isn’t contributing to the success of anyone except the other team. He finished the night with a minus two (the entire team was minus 16) and gave the puck away at least 10 times. He also had no drive and wasn’t skating at all. Even if he isn’t injured, he needs to get benched for a couple games.

In Play! Man of the Game: Jarome Iginla. Iginla finished the night with a goal and an assist, the goal being his first against the Red Wings in 18 games or roughly five years.

Red Wings Beat Division Leading Chicago Blackhawks

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

In a goal scoring affair, the Detroit Red Wings have defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in Chicago.

Chicago broke out to an early lead with goals from Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd. Then, after a Chicago goal was called back, the Red Wings scored five goals from Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Jason Williams, Valtteri Filppula, and Pavel Datsyuk. Chicago came storming back with a pair of goals from Ladd to give him a hat-trick, but they couldn’t catch the Wings.

This game was all Detroit after the goal by Dustin Byfuglien was called back because of incidental contact (A bad call that was almost identical to the goal called back on Detroit on Monday against Colorado). Detroit played a great game in the last 40 minutes, but the first 20 were terrible. Todd Bertuzzi left the game with a lower body injury in the second after an odd, but clean, check from Ben Eager.

In Play! Man of the Game: Todd Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi, although leaving with an injury, was the only Red Wing who played well in the first. He was also very active offensively, setting up three goals although he only was credited with two assists.

Red Wings Beat Nashville Predators

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings managed a 5-2 win over the division rival Nashville Predators to climb only three points behind Nashville for the seventh spot in the Western Conference.

Pavel Datsyuk opened the score sheet tonight with a takeaway that quickly found its way to the back of the net. Tomas Holmstrom followed a few minutes later with a powerplay goal. In the second, Darren Helm scored a pair of goals, the second of which was shorthanded, to give Detroit a 4-0 lead. Nashville then had goals from J P Dumont and Joel Ward, before Henrik Zetterberg scored an empty net goal.

Detroit came out and played a very strong game after having been embarrassed against Vancouver on Wednesday. Detroit out shot, blocked more shots, and registered almost twice as many hits as the Predators. They also dominated the face-off circle, winning 71 percent of the draws. Nashville’s best player in the face-off circle tonight was Marcel Goc, who only won 44 percent of his draws.

In Play! Man of the Game: Darren Helm. Helm had two goals and was a force to be reckoned with on the penalty kill. Playing on the top penalty kill line, Helm helped Detroit hold Nashville to only two shots on four power plays.

Red Wings Get Destroyed 6-3 at Home

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings were absolutely destroyed 6-3 by the Vancouver Canucks in their first game home from the Olympics.
Vancouver had two goals from Ryan Kesler, their first and sixth goals, as well as tallies from Alex Burrows, Kyle Wellwood, Sami Salo, and Mikael Samuelsson. Detroit matched Vancouver goal to goal for the first two with goals by Jason Williams and Henrik Zetterberg, Zetterberg’s 200 career goal. However, the Red Wings didn’t score again until the last five minutes of the game when Johan Franzen scored on the powerplay.

The Wings looks like a collection of lemmings, just aimlessly jumping the boards with no purpose. Jimmy Howard was pulled from net midway through the game after allowing 4 goals, but Chris Osgood didn’t look much better himself. Howard allowed one goal for every 5 shots he faced, Osgood only managed to hold the Canucks to a goal on every six shots faced. On the offensive side, the Wings couldn’t hit the net with the puck if their lives depended on it. The Wings had more blocked (12) and missed (20) shots than they had shots (31) on goal.

In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik/Daniel Sedin. The Sedin twins were on fire tonight and, although they didn’t score any goals, amassed six points between the two of them.

NHL TRADE DEADLINE Q & A

In Play Magazine

March 3rd 3pm EST is the NHL trade deadline.

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding a trade and how it works.

How is a trade made?
After two clubs have come to an agreement on a trade, the clubs must advise the League office, either by telephone or by FAX, of the terms of the trade. The League office then schedules a conference call with the two teams to review the transaction and give final approval for the deal. Prior to the trade call, the League office will ensure that the team has the appropriate salary cap space to make the deal; if draft choices are involved, that the club has the available choices; and that the team has available space on its reserve list to add the player (s). It should be noted that the 23-man roster restriction is no longer in force from March 3 on.

On the trade call, the League will a) review the terms of the player contracts and ensure that teams are aware of their respective obligations to the player (s) involved; b) ensure that, should a player have a no-trade clause, that the player has waived that right; and c) ensure that any conditions to consummation of the transaction have been clearly defined and agreed upon.

The trade becomes official after the trade call has taken place.

What if a player involved in a transaction has a "no-trade" clause?
No-trade clauses can vary from player to player. For example, a player may have a list of teams that he has agreed to be traded to. The League requires written documentation from the player that he has waived his no-trade clause. If applicable, the documentation must also stipulate which teams the player has agreed it is permissible for him to be traded to.

Can a trade take place after the 3 p.m., ET deadline on March 3, 2010?
Trade calls may take place after the 3 p.m. deadline but the League must have been advised of any and all transactions, including the specific details, prior to 3 p.m. It is not unusual that a number of trades are agreed to between the clubs just before 3 p.m. However, due to the volume of trades occurring just prior to the deadline, the League may not be able to conduct the actual trade call until after 3 p.m. There are five League officials that conduct trade calls and calls may last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the deal.

How is a player's salary charged against a team's salary cap when a trade is made at the deadline?
The salary that is charged against a team's cap is the pro rated amount remaining of the player's average yearly salary. For example, if a player has an average yearly salary of $2 million, the amount charged against the acquiring team's cap is the pro-rated amount remaining of $2 million.

This is calculated by dividing $2 million by the number of days in the season (193). The amount ($10,363) is then multiplied by the number of days remaining in the season from the day the trade is made (40 days if trade is on March 3) to ascertain the amount charged against the team's cap ($414,508).

Red Wings' Kirk Maltby has Surgery - Talks with In Play! about his Future.

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

The Detroit Red Wings' Kirk Maltby will undergo surgery on his shoulder today in what many have said will be the end to his season and possible, because of his age and lack of contract for next season, career.

However, Maltby doesn’t see eye to eye with these people.

The first thing that Maltby wanted to get straight is that he doesn’t plan on missing the rest of the season. “I’m hoping I can be back at least for the last week of the season and for the playoffs,” Maltby tells In Play! magazine.

When asked about the future of his career, Maltby says, “I defiantly don’t want my career to end like this. I understand the business…but I think I can still contribute to this team winning. My plan is to be back on the ice next season, even if it’s not with Detroit.”

While Maltby does plan on being around at least one more year, he also tells In Play that he’ll be done by the next time the Winter Olympics come around in 2014.

Red Wings Start Playoff Push with Win

By AJ Petronzi
In Play Magazine

It was not the way the Detroit Red Wings wanted to win tonight's game, but they did beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in the first game in the NHL after the Olympic break.

Tomas Holmstrom scored the first goal in this contest and Johan Franzen scored on the powerplay to give the Wings a two goal advantage. In the second period, TJ Galiardi and Chris Stewart tied the game. In the third, Nicklas Lidstrom scored his first road goal of the season and the game winner.

There were concerns going into the game about the fatigue of the players coming home from Vancouver (particularly the Wings Brian Rafalski and Colorado’s Paul Stastny) but that didn’t factor in greatly. Stastny didn’t get as involved in the game as Colorado would have liked, but most of the Aves were just standing around while Detroit skated around them. Detroit did give away a two goal lead tonight and looked terrible in the second period, but the rebounded from that.

In Play! Man of the Game: Tomas Holmstrom. Holmstrom scored the first goal and had assists on both of Detroit’s other goals. Holmstrom looked rested and better than he’s looked all season.
