Red Wings Lose in Shootout to Penguins

After spending most of the game in their own end, the Detroit Red Wings lost 2-1 to the Pittsburg Penguins after forcing a shootout.
Sidney Crosby was the first person to score a goal today. Dan Cleary tied the game back up on a deflection from Brad Stuart. In the shootout, neither of Detroit’s shooters (Pavel Datsyuk and Jason Williams) managed to score, however both Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored to give Pittsburg the win.

The Wings didn’t show up to play hockey until about three minutes into the third period, but part of that was due to officiating. All three of the Wings penalties shouldn’t have been called. Datsyuk was given a penalty after Malkin high-sticked himself and Drew Miller was given two minutes for high-sticking himself. Valtteri Filppula was called for hooking because his stick was being held by a Penguin. On the other side of that coin, Pittsburg, which had significantly more penalties anyway, got away with a lot including a malicious sucker punch to Patrick Eaves almost a full 10 seconds after the end of the second period. Pittsburg played a dirty game. Niklas Kronwall re-injured his knee during overtime and no word was given about the severity of the injury. He was hurt when he went to check Jordan Staal and their knees collided, unlike the rest of the game, it was clean.

In Play! Man of the Game: Henrik Zetterberg. Zetterberg owned the face-off circle today, going 81% in the circle on 16 face-offs. He also assisted on Detroit’s only goal.
