MSU Team On A Mission? Jim Calhoun Thinks So.

After Saturday night’s 82-73 win for Michigan State, Connecticut Head Coach Jim Calhoun gave his assessment of MSU’s recent surge.

“They played special,” Calhoun says. “They have a cause. Anytime you have a cause, it's a great, great thing to rally people around. Tommy did a wonderful job with this team.”

Izzo talks eloquently about providing some hope for Detroit and Michigan, where the economic downturn has hit harder than most cities in the country, and Calhoun gave his fellow coach and friend credit for using the situation as a rallying point.

“I think that Tommy has done a masterful job of putting the woes of the auto industry and Detroit and Michigan on his back,” Calhoun explains. “I never thought they could do what they did to Louisville. I honestly mean that.”

Connecticut played three Big Ten teams in their regular season schedule and Calhoun thought those games would be a good measuring stick for how MSU might play on Saturday. Plus, his coaching staff spent a lot of time breaking down film of the Spartans’ regular season games. Calhoun admits neither was representative of the Michigan State team that took the floor at Ford Field.
