LIONS HIRE GUNTHER CUNNINGHAM AS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Allen Park, Mich.— Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Schwartz has announced the hiring of Gunther Cunningham as the Lions’ defensive coordinator. Terms of his contract were not disclosed.

Cunningham is a 40-year coaching veteran on the college and pro levels, including the past 27 seasons in the NFL. As an NFL coach, he has served 10 seasons as a defensive coordinator and two seasons as head coach, and during his time in the NFL he has worked with linebackers and defensive line in 16 of those seasons.

He most recently served as the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator from 2004-08, his second stint with the Chiefs’ organization. Cunningham served as assistant head coach/linebackers (2001-03) on Jeff Fisher’s coaching staff with the Tennessee Titans along with Schwartz. Prior to his stint in Tennessee, he was with the Chiefs for the first time as the team’s defensive coordinator (1995-98) and head coach (1999-2000).
