Moving into a third week of silence from the camp of Mike Modano, the Detroit Red Wings are now looking at finding their replacement for Brad May. Nearly three weeks ago Modano was reported as saying he liked the concept of playing in Detroit, but also likes the storyline of going to Minnesota. Mike Babcock, the Wings coach, seems to think Modano is leaning toward Detroit.
Aaron Downey has a cup ring with Detroit but might find himself having a locker in Joe Louis Arena next season also. Downey, who took a sabbatical last season after being denied contracts by Detroit and Phoenix, rehabbed his body and hockey skills during the 09-10 season. Now Downey has been granted a tryout with the Wings whose current enforcers, if you can call them that, are Justin Abdelkater and Patrick Eaves.
The Wing’s long list of free agents this off season has remained relaxed as well. Drew Miller, Patrick Eaves, Sergei Kolosov and Derek Meech have remained in the Winged Wheel while Jeremy Williams and Brett Lebda have sought contracts elsewhere. Jason Williams, Andreas Lilja and Kirk Maltby headline the Wings free agents that are still available.
